Default Steering wheel play?

A quick one:
Met a fellow owner, drove his 2014 XK-- the steering response was tight, like flick-of-the wrist tight, less than 1/2 inch either way on the wheel.
Drove mine again and was very much aware of what would be "normal" play on an older car, maybe an inch and a half each way.
I've got a 2010 with 21,000 miles on it (his had about 12K). Is a little play normal, or is this a cause of concern? Haven't seen any threads on this in particular. I should also point out that I just swapped out to Continential Extreme Pro Contacts about a week ago. Much smoother ride.
Thanks as always...

mine is a 2008 with approx. 39,000 miles and my steering is tight . also probably no more than 1/2". I know that with my chevy truck I can feel the slack in the wheel. I can feel nothing with the XK. I have to be conscious of looking away from where I am going.
1 1/2" either way seems excessive to me.

I would check your tire pressures as with a softer riding tire you may be experiencing more side wall flex. Also do we assume you also got an alignment when you put the new tires on. I have 16K on my 2012 with Conti DWS and don't have a response play issue but the old Dunlops had a different feel.

Got an alignment, will double-check pressure. I was previously riding on the original Dunlops which were basically bald on the rears.

My 07' with 49000km. has no play in the steering. If you tires and pressure are good, take it to an alignment shop and have them take a peek at the front end. There are a few 'maintenance' items that can cause some play in the steering.
