Default Steering Wheel Shaky

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to ask your opinion as to the source of this problem. For some time now, my steering wheel shakes when driving around 30-50mph. It goes away when driving on the freeway 60-70mph.

Within the last six months I have changed the Front upper control arms, front Steering knuckles, Front Sway bar bushings. I am in the process of slowly buying rear suspension parts as they are VERY deteriorated. ( Rear Upper control arms, Bushings on rear lower arms.

I replaced my 17 inch wheels with 19's yesterday. The shaking is much more evident now. What do you guys think?

Hi there,
re your steering wheel shaking...

Can we assume that you've had your wheels balanced? It sounds like it could be the issue from what you say!

Also I see you've got 19" wheels as an upgrade from 17"a.....nice too!
The wheels are a direct like for like fit as far as the hub is concerned, yes?

The above 2 seem like good things to check for me but probably the wheels being balanced may be the issue.

Good luck

Thank you,

The wheels were mounted and balanced just yesterday. And they are a direct fit.

Do you guys think it may be the front hub? As I stated, it ws still shaky withthe 17 s. Now its just more noticeable with larger wheels.

Default 2003 3.0L same same here

My 2 cents
1- Replaced rear suspension parts at dealer
2- Inspected front suspension components, dealer said they are new
2- Alignment
3- New 16" Wheels w/Continental tires balanced
4- Vibration between 45mph and 65mph remains

However, when the car is cold, vibration is very minimal, then the vibration starts. Does this has to do with the power steering speed control, maybe it is faulty and unable to make the steering heavier at higher speeds?
Don't know?!

Just read a link on Edmunds.com by "ewysocki" replacing the drive shaft at his Jaguar dealer solved the problem!

Steering wheel shaking at 30mph is unlikely to be from wheel balance. If the shaking exists with two different sets of wheels and tires, those can be pretty much eliminated from the list of possibilities.

Drive the car at a constant speed where the shaking is at it's worst and do the following tests.
Let off the gas pedal.
Slip the transmission into neutral.
Apply the brakes gently
Apply the brakes normally

Any immediate change(s)?

Is the shaking felt anywhere else on the car, or just the steering wheel?

Does the shaking diminish when entering a turn, ie as soon as pressure is applied to the wheel to turn?

The steering wheel actually does not shake when pressing the brakes. It only does so when speeding up into that 30-50mph interval. Once I reach a higher speed 60-70mph it completely disappears.

Neither set of wheels looks factory...? If they are both aftermarket make sure you have hub centric rings.

I consulted Brutal and we are going to try an alignment along with other unrelated maintenance (Transmission drain/fill) within the next couple of weeks. I will also take that opportunity to change the rear tie rods/links.

Hopefully this will give me a bit more insight into the problem. Ill keep you guys posted.

I have the same problem with my STR with stock rims. I got a wheel balance the other week and it seemed to help it at lower speeds (30-45), but still happens on the highway at 50-65 but cruising at 70 or higher it isn't noticeable.
