I replaced the fluid with the dexron 6 and added a 15 dollar bottle of the friction modifier. I did the procedure as outlined in the TSB. I was disappointed that it didn't instantly fix the problem (although I knew that wasn't realistic). But over the course of a few days the sound disappeared and I am hopeful it will stay gone. I am always suspicious of little bottles of automotive magic but this one did what it was supposed to. I would have sworn it was coming from the steering wheel but it was the rack apparently .

 

I fixed mine with the addictive. It was quite cheap(?), compare to other parts in my local Jag dealer (under $12).

I've added the additive over a year ago and it fixed the noise, but I am still noticing a bit of a quiver or shudder when turning left or right, especially when turning more quickly. Any ideas about what this might be?

Great info in this thread, thanks to everybody. My 'new' XJR has the squeaking problem and most likely also needs a new bushing (loose steering wheel).

 

While my wife was backing the car out of the garage, I thought I heard a noise(not squeaking) but a soft hum. I thought it was the tires on the concrete at first but when turning on the macadam. made the same noise like low whining. I read this thread and think I need to try the additive to see if it helps. Most here mention squeaking which I do not hear so if someone has any more info on the possibility it could be something else, bushing maybe, please let me know.

On this magic potion, I have not had time to get on the Jag site because I have been on a Jeep site the last few weeks trying to get this Jeep working right. What a problem car this is. When changing the differential fluid, which is held in with a rubber cap on the cover, no threads!, you have to add a small bottle of magic potion to it also to help the gears work better. And how about you need to change the sway bar right away to a larger size then stock because the Jeep can move all over the road with the smaller one they put on. Did this and the ride was a big difference.

 

I have had the same issue ever since I added the fluid with new PS oil.

The noise took 2-3 days to completely go away then it started shuddering after about 20-30 days. Now squeak (v minor) has started coming back again after about 1.5 year and slight shudder is also there as you mentioned

Please share with us if you find the solution to cure it.

I guess you guys are luckier than me, the magic liquid cost $17 in San Jose. Something about plastic bag recycling I think. (I am kidding. There is a surtax on plastic bags in San Jose and Santa Clara. That I am not kidding about. Every time you go shopping, its BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag)

Did anyone else notice that in the instructions for JTB00055, the service person is to turn the wheel 90 degrees (a quarter turn) in step 3, but the illustration show 190 degrees? And then, in step 5, the service person is required to perform steps 1 and 2 for the opposite direction full lock. Yet what about steps 3 and 4?

Sorry if I seem **** about this. I write technical manuals as a profession. So I can be quite critical of instructions that are ambiguous or inaccurate.

 

I didn't notice but I expect you're right and for sure good tech writers are hard to find. You actually don't seem to need to do the turning at all. Plenty of people including me have just removed some old oil, stuck in the additive and then normal usage does the rest within a week.

A search of this thread from google led me to this forum and have since signed up. I have had my car a week and the steering wheel squeak has started to bother me, so I just went to the dealer yesterday and got this magic potion for $11. I suck out the reservoir with a turkey baster, and poured it in and topped it up with Dexron III (which I was skeptical it being tranny fluid and all). Followed the TB procedure and have driven approx. 100km since yesterday. The squeak is still there but maybe a little quieter. I hope it disappears in the coming week, or I'll be getting into the other TB on shaft and bushing lube. Other then that I love this car.

 

Where exactly do I spray the white lithium grease to stop the squeaking sound in the steering wheel? Any chance you have a picture? I tried the additive by Jaguar and it did not stop the squeaking sound. I put the additive in the power steering fluid weeks ago and it did not help at all. I also get a little vibration / shuttering when I turn the wheel to the right and I am just starting off when pulling out of a parking spot. Thanks!

 

Does anyone know if Jaguar Additive PAS Fluid C2S48887 is the same formulation as Lubrizol 6178?

 

Did you ever find out if it's the same? Might be generic fluid.

 

I put the fluid in years ago now and it fixed the issue. Then when I had to put more PS fluid in the reservoir the noise came back a bit and I had add some more the anti squeak fluid again.
