Is there any way of checking/ doing tests on an intertia switch?
Hi there,
I have a 1999 s type with a code B2172 coming up.
Inertia switch tripped (vehicle impact)
RECM to inertia switch circuit: open circuit
Inertia switch failure
The switch hasnt tripped but is there anyway of testing it?
At a loss, hope you can help

John,
Not been there on ours yet, BUT, an inertia switch is a simple ON/OFF switch, controlled by an inertia device internally, which on the earlier cars was a large ball bearing.
My earlier cars, mainly the S2 V12 and XJ-S had issues with those silly switches, so I simply joined the wires together, as there were only 2, and proved to myself that the switch was causing the intermittent running of the fuel circuit.
Once confirmed i replaced the switches.
I then attempted to dismantle the old units, you gotta try, no such luck, so dumped them.
I dont see this switch being a rocket science item, so joining the wires should stop any hissy operations, and then plan B can be executed.

Its come in not running, hasnt been taxed since 2010 but was turning over until Jan, then it got a flat battery and now wont run. Thats all the info I have other than fault code B2172

The full entry for B2172 in the Jaguar DTC listing is:

(click on the images to enlarge them)
The switch is simply set ON or tripped OFF. Testing for continuity rules a faulty switch in or out.
The Inertia Switch feed is from the Ignition Switch through the Primary Junction Box:
Possibility of harness or junction faults here.

The output from the switch goes to the RECM (Rear Electronic Control Module and there's the possibility of a break or bad connection in the GB harness CA-100-08
After that, if all connections to the RECM are OK, the module itself is suspect as the fuel pump is working and only a DTC is being stored.
