Default Timing chain tensioner replaced(need help)

i heard a rattling noise on my lincoln ls with similar engine to s type. I opened the valve cover and decided to replace the secondary chain tensioner. after installing everything, the secondary chain looked lose but then i tried turing crank with a ratched, on some turns the chain is tight then it loosens up and then its tight again, the tensioner spring goes up and down, so i am not sure whats going on, i just finished everything and started the car and i can still hear the rubbing sound
here is the video of my car http://www.youtube.com/user/kassanov.../0/LwMxBc1aDzk

I have attached several sets of instructions on changing the timing chain tensioners on the Jaguar V-8. With good pictures. See if that will help??

what were the condition of the original tensioners...were they cracked or damaged? did you find any pieces in the oil pan?

bottom side of the tensioner was worn out , but i don't understand is that the after installing the new tensioner, the chain feels lose from the top side of the tensioner but when i turn the crank it tightens up, looks like a play in the exhaust cam as i turn those counterclockwise the chain tightens up. i dont know what is wrong, i doubt the chain is stretched

I would NOT fabricate something from any hardware store. I would contact several Jaguar repair shops and see if a short term loan can be arranged for the proper tools. You will destroy your engine if it's not correct. The Jaguar and Lincoln engines are interference designs. This means that if the cams are not in correct time the valves will hit the pistons. You have a 32 valve V-8 don't risk this!!!

Could the chain have already jumped a tooth before you replaced the tensioner?

Can I say this is beyond me. However, you should take tbird6 very seriously.

hey tbird 6, okay i listened both valve covers with stethoscope and the sound is comming from the one i replaced. i read ur article its really good, when i put the exhaust sprocket on the cam, the chain feels tight but when i tighten the sprocket bolt the chain losens up, so i tried turning the crank with wrench the chain tighens up and then losens up, so what exactly did u do to cure this, i see u mentioned in ur article that thats what u experienced as well,

I am too far away to be much help but my guess is that the cams are slightly out of time. I would pull the chain off and make double sure the crank and cams are in proper position. THEN install the chains and tensioners. But this is just a guess??

HTML Code:
hi tbird I know u can help me out here, i opened the driver side valve cover, found that the tensioner is installed opposite to the other side which i did last week, i mean the spring side was on the top but when i opened the right side of the car before it was installed inverted, i rotated the crank, on some turns the bottom chain tightens up and then losens up a little , but since the slack is felt on the bottom on this side compared to the side i opened up before slack was on the top since the spring part of the tensioner was installed on the bottom side. I want to know when u did urs were the tensioners installed opposite to each other or what.

i really need ur help buddy i am so clost to finish, give me ur email add i can send u the picture and the video i made

Look at these search resulrs from the Lincoln Vs Cadillac forum. Lots of good information on Lincoln LS timing chan and tensioner problems!

Camshaft bearing caps are 9-11 Nm. BTW, the secondary tensioner is 10-14 Nm and the valve cover is 9-11 Nm.

I owe so so much! Thank you.
I have been a member over on the automotive forums for years and the LS guys wouldn't tell me what the specs are.

And I join here, this morning and get a answer right away.

Here is just how bad it is.
