As a one time emergency I carried a kayak on top of my previous 03 S-Type. I placed it keel up with foam pipe insulation front and aft to protect the roof. I positioned the foam close to the sun roof where the roof structure was stronger. I used thin straps through the open doors and closed the doors after snug. It was a small tandem and I did not use a line off the bow out of concern for the paint . It would seem that a stern line would work though. I would be cautious with a canoe due to the higher weight and greater surface area to risk it moving around under speed. Good luck

Open the trunk (boot), remove the reinforcing framing from the rear seats, drop the rear seats and add a lot of tie downs(?).

Or buy a vehicle that was meant to haul a canoe(!).

I'd invest in a Class 2 hitch and a small trailer. Then you don't run any risk buggering something up while loading/unloading/hauling something.
