Default Transmission Fluid Change question

2000 S type 4.0 5R55N transmission question.
So all seems good for the most part, no trans light on dash.
After driving for 30 plus minutes the trans is starting to slip just a bit with a light low sound. (1st to 2nd gear) I figure since the car has 97K and the previous owner never changed fluid it is time for filter and new fluid. I was talking to a person that has had many Jaguars and was a dealer and he stated most likely if i was to have the fluid flushed and filter the transmission would likely fail shortly after.
Any one had a transmission go out after a fluid change?
Thank you,
Jay

It really depends on what underlying problems there are before the fluid change. I had an old van that I had the trans go after a fluid change but that was because of how abused it had been from previous owners the pump couldn't get the pressure with the newer thinner fluid that wasn't burnt to go through the trans so it stayed in 1st. So really it depends on if there are any other problems with the trans. If I was you I would read up on the threads about the 5R55N and pick the one thats closest to your problem and try that if it doesn't work with that and a fluid filter change you may be looking at a rebuild or a salvage trans. If you plan on keeping her for a while I would opt for the rebuild as you will more then likely get a warranty that will cover you in the future.

Its basic logic IMO. A lot of folks wait to service their transmission till they have problems. Then with new fluid the Transmission fails anyway. So they blame the new fluid. Go figure.

Nobody has ever offered a credible explanation of how fresh fluid damages a "good" transmission.

Sounds reasonable, i did see someone post that if you change the fluid, save old filter and fluid and put back in if new filter/fluid does not help or even makes the trans worse.
Just find it strange that all is well and shows no shifting issue until 30-60 minutes or more of driving. Just the fact that new fluid is thinner would probably make the issue worse? not sure if this is true or not...

If, and I repeat IF your transmission is already on the verge of failure, changing the ATF fluid isn't going to lose you anything -- except maybe a breakdown in the middle of nowhere, at night, in the freezing cold rain.
Most transmision faults are considerably helped or eliminated altogether by a simple ATF fluid change, partic. after 30,000mile for mineral, 60,000mile for full-synthetic.
All the old-boy mechanics say the same. Autobox problems? CHANGE THE FLUID!
Just get on with it man.
