Keep up the good work sir.
Is there a filter in there that can be replaced by dropping the pan or is that out of the question?

I think I will use a tapered lid from the gear oil quarts and run a little hose or just clean out one of those gear oil containers and refill it with the trans fluid to squeeze it in.

Thanks for that, I try, or am I trying at times, who cares, not me.

There is a filter in there, and I have one on the bench, and on the "to do list" for when I get around to it. The filter change thing is only an old habit for replacement. I rarely see a blocked filter, and if it is, and crud in the bottom of the pan, that transmission (no matter what brand/make) is history, and fresh fluid will not save it now. That is why I suggest some serious common sense (rarity these days I know).

So when you drain your fluid I suggest the following:
1) Look at it, it looks awful, agreed.
2) Place some between your fingers, and rub it around. If it still feels like oil and not all gritty, then it is probably not badly contaminated with metal and friction material.
3) If the finger feel is inconclusive, do the same with some new stuff you have right there on the bench, compare the feel.
4) Pour some into a clean glass jar, leave it settle overnight, have a peep at it in the morning, see what, if anything has settled out of it.

Of course, if you got money, I dont, send it to a lab for analysis, and see what gives.

Seriously, in ALL my years with Jags, I have NEVER had a trans failure, and YES, I am a tad "over the top" in regard to servicing. My son did the dirty on his S2 XJ12 BW12, drag racing with his mate, and it lost 2nd gear. He lost the car for 12 months, I am TOUGH.

Thinking on that funnel on my ladder, I reckon a 2nd funnel, smaller, with a 2mm hose, and drip feed connector, so I can stay lubricated whilst under the car, Merlot comes to mind right now, HAHAHA. There is always a way to get a drink and a giggle.

Thats Fab Grant... The Merlot too... a fine choice for working on an ole Jag, classic. So in dropping the pan more oil should come out and a lot faster too. Then it gets a good cleaning and new filter and gasket. Also is it true the lincoln ls uses the same filter? My car shifts great now and agreed a bit of hindsight goes a long way.

Cheers M8

It's a common 5 speed Ford transmission. Millions of Fords besides the LS use it. That's why parts are so cheap.

That transmission is also known for valve body problems. So if it's still not quite right after the fluid change most likely it will require changing the valve body. Not that bad at about $300 or so. You don't want to just change solenoids as that usually won't fix it and the valve body has been revised and updated over the years.

Don't forget to clean the magnet in the pan and it should have some hair but not a big ball of metal shavings!
