Transmission Service

Our 2003 S-type has approximately 40,000 miles. I wanted to change fluid and filter in the transmission but was told that it is a sealed unit and the fluid cannot be changed. I have a very difficult time believing this. Has anyone else had their tarnsmission serviced. Engie is the 4.2L V8 and the transmission is the auotmatic.
Thanks

I don't know about this transmission which is why I haven't repsonded before, but it is not out of the question. Modern Mercedes transes are sealed and unserviceable. The thing isn't dropping the pan and draining the unit; the problem is the lack of a fill hole. In the mercedes transes, there is no fill hole tapped into the trans case. I would suspect that the jag fill hole is not reachable without dropping the trans or it doesn't have one. Whatever you do, don't drain the trans without knowing how you are going to refill it.

IT IS A SEALED 4 LIFE UNIT WITH A VERY EXPENSIVE MINERAL OIL FLUID. AND THE FILTER IS MOLDED INTO THE PAN SO IT IS NOT SEVICABLE. ALSO YOU NEED SPECIAL TOOLS TO FILL THE TRANNY AND ALSO THE JAG SCANNER TO FILL IT ACCURATLY.

so how often should we service these transmissions? i assume we have to take them to the dealer
the 2005 mustangs are similar, they have sealed automatic transmissions but still recommend taking them to get flushed every 30k

I just got my answer on the durability of this Jag's tranny. 39,000 miles on my 2000 3.0 and I need a new transmission. $6,000. Ain't that dandy. Started showing a warning light "Transmission fault". Now I know it's my "fault" for buying this thing.

Shouldnt it be covered under warranty?
Owners manul states that no service is required unless "sever duty" opertated....i don't know what that means, but as a mechanic, I highly recommend getting the fluid changed. The dealer can do it and will be happy to once you tell them that you will pay.....100 per hour plus 100 for fluid......
