Was just wondering a guy on ebay has used adaptive control shocks pulled off of a s-type with 60k. he says they are not leaking and function well. He is asking 85 bucks a side. what do you guys think vs paying 350 for each side new? and do you think 60k is to high in miles to buy them?

 

If I go to the time and trouble to replace shocks, I'm NOT going to roll the dice and take a chance on used ones. I don't want to have to do this again....

 

Assuming your car used adaptive shocks originally I would go with the used shocks. How much is your time worth? $265x2=$530-($85x2)=$360. Is your shock changing time/effort worth $360?

Rear shocks are relatively easy. You will need spring compressor(rent from Autozone) and a jack to manipulate the shock assembly during install. It took me 3 hours working slowly. You will need a second person also to spot you from top to get the top mount seated.

 

I would recommend against this. At 60k miles, it is highly likely they are in a declining state whether they are leaking right now or not. If you are planning on driving the car for more than a year (~15k miles) then there is no reason to put used, mostly worn parts on your car. Also, some guy on ebay probably didn't perform rebound and dampening tests to see how well they really "function" when compared to new. The ride of a car on new vs. used shocks and struts is really eye opening.

 

I agree. Used shocks with 60K are no bargain. Heck, I wouldn't do it even if they were free.

 

It's hard to give ourselves some labor cost credit when DIY a repair on our car. So $360 save is money in our pocket. Original Jaguar shocks, and even more so the CATS shocks are very high quality shocks. At 60K miles with no leaks, I would seriously consider using the used set especially for the rears which are quite easy to replace. I did both rears in 3 hours working slowly.
