V6 or V8 gas consumption
Hi I am Dennis Honeyball of Uxbridge Ontario retired (new member)
I owned an S type some time ago and am considering the purchase of another one but I don't know V6 or V8 gas consumption being
the issue. Please help me make up my mind the V8 in question is a 2003
V8 with 265000 kms the V6 is also a 2003 with 147000 kms both look to be in very good condition.
Hopefully one of you Jag veterans will help
Best regards Den

Dennis, welcome to our real world.
The choice is one asked many times.
I have 2 V6 S Types, albeit the earlier versions, and coming from too many years of V12 "warm and fuzzies" the change was like a quantum leap.
Once settled into the differences, HUGE by the way, I felt good a sweet. The 179kw we get here is serious enough.
YES, I wanted a V8, but the cookie jar was just not full enough, so maybe later.
The difference in consumption is very little. A V8 around the suburbs will consume slightly more than the V6. On the highway, at cruise control speed (down here a blanket 110kph) mine return 7.8L/100kms constantly. Plenty of oomph for overtaking etc. Around the 'burbs, approx 10.5L/100kms. The stop start. sitting in traffic etc is the killer here.
I still think the V8 has that "status" edge in MY opinion.
I still miss the V12's (as my sig states), and if the right V12 popped up, I will be gone in a flash.

Mileage should be off by ~10% but the V8 car should have better options an fit and finish.
But... while both of them may look to be in good shape the mileage concerns me. If it were me I would continue looking for a later car with fewer miles.
I spent a couple of years before finding mine at a Jaguar dealer in NJ, a '08 Satin Edition 4.2 with only 48K miles (ok, your in Canada, so you do the math... ;-)
Cheers

Hi Dennis-
I've got the V8 edition and a neighbour has the V6, both are 2003 model year. Put the cars side by side and it's hard to tell the difference except for the badge on the trunk.
I'd worry more about condition than fuel consumption since both versions do quite well all things considered. There's almost 120K Km difference between the two you're looking at.
Are they priced accordingly?

>Why would that be?
Well, I may be wrong, but I always thought that the V8s came better optioned then the V6s (i.e., NAV, blue-tooth, stereo, better leather grade used, etc.).

The cars side by side are the same.
We got the SE in our market for X200, and they added Sport, R, Luxury as the X202, X204 unfolded.
Apart from engine specs the rest of the cars are identical for the spec given. The original purchaser had the opportunity to get a V6, or a V8, tas all.

Both do fairly well on fuel economy for their size wieght and performance level. The V6 is better for fuel economy(FE). The EPA rating is about 1 mpg freeway and 2 mpg city. I'm a fuel economy buff and have a lifetime FE average of over 28 mpg with my 2000 3.0L SE. I have many tankfills over 30 mpg with a best of 36.6 mpg. I'd love to see what I could with the V8 but it would probably be the as the EPA difterential.
Significant mileage difference in the 2 cars the OP is looking at, hopefully the high miler is priced accordingly.

I just got my '04 S-Type 3.0 last week (my first Jag). Yesterday, on my way to work, I reset the trip computer after I got on the highway. By the time I left the highway, some 40 or so miles later, the average m.p.g. said 30.4. This morning before I left the driveway, I reset it again and did the whole 96 mile commute, including being stuck in traffic on the Interstate on the way home. As I pulled in, it reported 27.9 m.p.g. I drive on the freeway with the cruise control on, set between 65 and 70, for most of the trip.
I've left the B-side of the computer to accumulate since I bought the car. With mostly highway miles, but a certain amount of "hey, I got a Jag, let's see what it can do" driving, I'm averaging 22.8 m.p.g. since purchase.
Of course, YMMV.
Cheers.

A 2014 Ford Escape top of the line was even worse!
But 21.x mpg is the best on highway no matter where I go.
Power cost $.
