I'm not opposed to used engines, but I would check the timing components. Insure that the tensioners have been updated to the metal style. Also, before installation, check for oil leaks. If you need to do a front or rear crank seal, it's far easier with the engine on the ground than once it's in the car.

Forget the dealership man. Sell the car as-is and look for another one but this time take a mechanic with you to inspect the car from bumper to bumper. Do the math right man and you'll see that you'll be happy on the outcome. Forget buying a new engine just buy another jag, my opinion. Hope this helps!

I hope someone here can give me some good advise.
For years the only car my kid wanted was a Jag. After "careful" looking around we found a 2000 "S" type with about 100,000 miles on it. Regardless of the reason, the engine is now worthless and I have a very expensive car sitting at the Jag Dealership awaiting my decision.
The dealer wants $11,000 to put in a used (72,000 miles) engine in the car. Not hardly a good play in my book. The car was only $9000 when we purchased it. I can get an engine off of ebay for about $3000 and have found a mechanic to put it in for $2500. I have heard about kits to put a Chevy engine into this car. Is that an option worth looking into?

I am open for suggestions and advise, please.... help a guy out.

Thanks,
Gonzo.

Gonzo, You're getting played "slap" style. Utilize a better pick, as far as a repair shop goes. Used engine for $5K installed is closer to the groove you want to lay down.

That dealer is trying to SELL you a motor. Not fix your car.

Take it to the local cheap guy and get him to swap in a used motor. OR see your local fabricator/hot rod guy and stuff a 4.6 litre V8 in there.

It really chaps my hide when a dealer tries to sell a new engine or transmission at crate prices to someone who has a nearly 10 year old car.

I agree but this is not even a new motor it has 72K on it!
Walk away and find a better deal if you want to keep the car.

$2500? Please. I drove to the storage lockup. Rented a hoist at 9:01 am. I pulled the dead motor from my Merkur. Then pulled the dead motor from the the donor car. Then put the motor in my car. I was home for dinner.

I bet I could have a V8 out in about 5 hours. Back in.... let's double removal to 10. 15 hours. I'm sure you can find a local mechanic that can do this for $100 an hour. Book time and real time are two different things. I saw a used motor once for $2500 plus shipping. Good price.

What is actually wrong with this motor? Define "toast".

Ouch! I feel bad for you, that sounds crazy and it's hard to believe a jag dealer is telling you 11.5 for a used motor!
Seems to me that a hot rod shop should be able to put a really nice motor in place of the jag unit for that kind of money!

Shoot here's an 01 with the 4.0 for 9900 in florida with 70k miles. If it were my money I'd say scrap what you have sell it for cheap and go buy a different one. You should be able to get at least 4 maybe 5 grand from yours and buy a different one. LINK

Shoot there's a 2000 for 8900 on ebay with the v8.

Well, to stuff a Ford 4.6 in there you'll need some custom header work, a couple fabbed engine mounts, a fabbed tranny mount (a different tranny too) fancy hoses, maybe a hood scoop and then some electronics grafted in. Custom work that in the end would be about the same money as a $3000 motor stuffed in there for $2000 in labour.

You either pay about $5000 for a used jag or $9000 for one. I for one would do the compression test myself and make sure it wasn't a failed tensioner that caused a timing skip. A timing skip will cause a bad compression test. does it drive and make ugly noises or is it dead dead?
