I've only had my STR for about 2 months. Others in this thread are talking about their car roasting tires (although "tire" is more accurate) all through 1st gear. This has concerned me abit, since mine does nothing of the sort with my Conti Xtreme-Contact DWS tires. And frankly, this does not feel like one of the faster cars I've owned. But you and I are probably both accustomed to feeling like we're missing-out compared the the guys at sea-level. So my question is, what should I be expecting out of this, stock / unmodified at our local strip and along the Wasatch front? 'cuz it sure doesn't feel like a 13-second car.

(I'll say quietly that it's possible that a 13-second car doesn't thrill me the way it once did, before doing 12's, 11's and even 10's.... but still, I expect a little more than I'm getting)
Personally I think it's a trifecta of problems. First and foremost, the STR was not designed to be a drag car. 18" wheels, IRS, no LSD, the suspension tuning was not built with drag racing in mind. Wheel spin is always going to be. Limiting factor. Our track up here sucks ***** for prep, and this is why I have favored awd cars in the past. He'll most of the pits they put you in didn't even used to be paved.

The crappy tires don't help one bit on this traction limited car. I have crappy tires that aren't even the right size on the back of my STR, 265's instead of 275's.

I also think the has at soak plays a huge part, my car during the warmer months was pretty much one good run then the system starts to rise in temp. Now that its winter my car is almost useless it spins the tires so much even when I am just gently accelerating.

My best time stock was a 14.0 @ 100. I may have had the k&n filter in but that would be it. I still haven't even changed the spark plugs. That was with a good cool off time of 30 min. with ice on the intercoolers to cool them off. The car had a 13.9 in it, but I just couldn't put it together before they closed the track. My best launch was none at all just rolling on the throttle as soon as the light turned green. Any launch at all and I would spin all the way into 2nd.

I know where your coming from on what feels fast. My friend has a 900 something hp Toyota Celica all-trac turbo, after riding in that every thing else seems slow.

Now the goood part is all the down sides of the STR are easily remided with some simple stuff. I have seen boosted C5 corvette guys pull 1.6 sec 60' times with 18" drag radials. Put in an LSD, drag radials, some basic modds to the air/water intercooler system and the exhaust and pully most people put on and the STR should really wake up.

Ditto. An LSD will allow the STR to lay down much lower ET's.

see, I'm just not getting the wheel spin y'all are talking about. a little, sure. Mainly when accelerating in a corner. Easy spins. But in a straight-line, from a stop, I gotta really be trying to spin, and even then it's only 40' or so.

Now that is has cooled off are you still not spinning that much? I took my car out the other night and jumped on it for just a sec with the traction control off and the car went sideways and was all the way in the other lane. Luckily were out in the sticks so no traffic but you get the idea. Even with TC on I still couldn't do anything but spin.

At the track with my cool down I fubed up a couple of launches and just spun and spun and spun. One run it was so bad I got wheel hop and had to let off and then get back on it.

If you make back to back passes with the stock air to water setup as temps start to build in the system power goes down quickly.

Your tires suck. Mitchelin Pilot Sports, etc. should do the trick. We need a LSD.

Sounds like every single one of my runs, good to know...

Look at it this way...the safety margins Jaguar built in, i.e. decreasing power as heat rises, helps with longevity of the motor. My 03 STR pulls very hard, not bad for a 135k mile motor.

Seems clear that proper tyres are needed.

Bear in mind that TL Jaguar over here have put the Quaife LSD in, as I posted. It was in JWM (Jag World Monthly). Dunno if it's sold out but if not you can order the back issues from USA and they post them out.

Not cheap, though.

spinall4: what tires are you running?
I'm running NEW Continental Extreme Contact DWS, with a 275/35/18 on the rear. This is my first experience with them, but they are pretty grippy.

Now, as for spinning tires into the other lane.... I've never seen this happen from only one wheel spinning :-) usually, you gotta break both loose before you'll start to see the rear moving side-to-side. at least in my experience. you sure you weren't turning? :-)

have any of y'all ever used a mobile-app to test your 1/4-mile times using GPS? There are several avaialable in the Google-Play store, but not sure how accurate they'd be. ??

Maybe I'll give it a try.

Don't have a 1/4 mile time as of yet, but hope to solve that this weekend. Went to Houston Motorsport Park in my newly purchased 2006 Jaguar S Type R, and laid down a best time of 8.77 @84 mph in the 1/8th mile. I'm sure this can be improved but this was my first time at a drag strip so I'm sure my times will get better as time passes. I currently have some Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires on both the front and rear. Fronts are 245/40/18 and rears are 275/35/18. Thinking of getting some dedicated drag racing tires. Found some Mickey Thompson E/T Street SS tires in 275/45/18 that might work on the STR but I'll just have to see.

Any advice is appreciated. First time really drag racing a car and modifying as such.

Thank you! The 2 Super V8's are my father's but I work on them for the most part. The XJ8 I had that was mine was totaled as of recently so it is why I now have a 2006 S Type R. Have done a fair bit of trouble shooting on the XJ's so it's why I have them listed on the profile. Currently have one Super V8 for sale. My pops is 76 and has 3 cars which he can't use so he's selling one.

Thought I’d post a little update on my 1/4 mile times. My car is bone stock other than a X Pipe and Muffler delete. Car is currently on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S’s all the way around. For the time slips my number is 1780. First two runs I ran A 13.6 and a 13.7 respectively. After talking with some good friends of mine who are avid drag racers, I let the car cool down for a hour and used ice to cool off the supercharger. Put a bag over the top of the intake plenum and let it cool off. 3rd run ended up being the best one of the night. Cut a 1.98 60 foot and ended the run with a 13.14 @107.29. Was super impressed with this run. Let the car cool down some more but wasn’t able to run as good as previously but still ran a 13.4 @104. Wasn’t able to get a 5th run in for the night as the track got sprayed with coolant from one of the final cars running down the strip. Super happy with my Jag and look forward to more runs in the future.

Last run of the night. I’m 1780

3rd run of the night. I’m 1780

Second run of the night. I’m 1780

First run of the night. I’m 1780

Hey great runs! And thanks for posting.

It's a real shame that track is shutting down too. 35 years in operation.

Thank you I appreciate It!

Truly is a shame. Doesn’t make sense to me but there is Houston Motorsport Park at least.

For all of you guys that have '06+ years S Type R your in luck as We can easily tune it for more power! S type willl have similar potential as many 4.2 xkr cars I have tuned over the years. My personal 08 XKR has around 511hp with minimal mods. With our reprogramming and basic mods Up to 100 HP gain or about 50hp and 70lb of torque on a complete stock setup . Unfortunately S-Types before 06 are more difficult to tune and power gains are not nearly as large. Feel free to pm
