Wheel Nuts - Stripping
Has anyone had a problem with removing cross threaded wheel nut? The metal seems so soft that the hex shape has stripped when the Auto Club tried to remove it.
The final suggestion has been to drill out the stud centre, then remove the nut, and replace the stud through the hub and brake mechanism.
Seems pretty extreme to me.
Any ideas?
And a Merry Christmas to all on the forum.

I had that problam, lucky for me we used a smaller bit and pounded it on with a rubber mallet. but i was looking at doing the dill out if that didn't work. Maybe heat it up a little before you try turning it. kinda like the warm water on the jar trick,
or drill a little bit into the top of the lugnut, thread the whole with a right tighting thread, then put a bolt in the twist off.
You could put the bit onand fill it with super glue let it dry and twist it off. lol
Weld something to itand twist that.
i have lots of stupid ideas. i'll keep going.
Dremil the nut off.
Dremil the nut into an smaller nut.
Eat it.
Make a time machine and kill the person that crossthreaded thatlugnut onto your stud.
i would say try pounding a smaller rachet head onto the lugnut. Make sure you line it up correctly.
Now that i think about it i should have taken a pic of the nut before i pounded it cuz it wasn't stripped it was bowed out. like a little bomb had gone off inside of it. weird ha? guess that means my car is so fast that the lugs explode!!!!
And when ever i take my car to a tire shop they tell me all my lugnuts are loose. you know cuz they have that cover that rattles.
ok well i'm done telling my tire storys.... merry christmas. good luck. BTW studds aren't to hard to replace.

Well lots of food for thought there.
As an alternative to drilling the stud out completely I'd suggest drilling a smaller hole centered on the edge of the nut/stud which will be easier with a small pistol drill you will likely have at home, then you can split the nut with a chisel then knock out the stud.
Good luck.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.
Final solution - the nut was drilled out in two places with a fine diamond tipped bit and then split with a chisel.
The thread was then 'recut' and new nut fitted - cheap and simple.

Just throwing it out here. We use a 19mm hole saw. Goes right around the outside of the stud and just takes off the majority of the nut. Then you get some vice grips and it comes right off. 5 minutes.
You said push it from behind. What kind of nuts you talking about???? LOL....just poking fun.

You folks in here shouldn't feel like the "Lone Ranger". A BUNCH of people who own Lincoln LS had the same problem with the lug nuts. I ended up replacing all of mine on my 2000 LS. Same story with the window regulators. Ford screwed up many of the same items on the Jag S-Type and Lincoln LS, since they were built on the same platform. I happen to be one of the fools who not only bought a 2000 Lincoln LS, but a 2003 Jaguar S-Type. Both are nice cars, if you can afford them............repair-wise. I had membership in LLSOC and there were sources listed for both lug nut and window regulator replacements.
The 2003 S-Type is nothing like the 2000-2002 car. Body looks the same but that is all. Car is a completely different animal now. I would own a 2003 up S-Type no problem. Good cars.
