Default Wiper motor question

Hey y'all, so my 03 S-type has 53k on it and when driving it home from the purchase last fall I noticed the wipers would only work on high and immediately stop when turned off (not going to home position). But... not all the time? Some times they would work properly.

I first tried new relays. No change. Next I put in a new motor and it now works properly. But I have a question...

This car being inside nearly every day of its life I was very surprised to see two things and am wondering if I have a bigger problem than just the motor.
1. The "old motor" was a ford reman unit! As you can see its somewhat rusty and it looked original to me but then clearly marked on it is "REMAN"
2. It's plastic is blistered up in three places.

Three motors in 53k miles of a truly pampered cars just doesn't seem right to me. What advise can you knowledgeable / experienced guys give?

Thanks in advanced! Rich

One fairly common problem with these is that the mechanisms go stiff/sieze, which probably results in the motors burning out. If only the motor is replaced without properly freeing up or replacing the mechanism, the next motor follows the first one after some time soon.

Thanks, I'm going to take the old one apart to see.
