I ordered an exchange rebuilt one today for $120. Total of $201 with thermostat,3 gaskets,3 belts and delivery.

 

Blimey, $120 seems very reasonable. It wasn't too bad a job in the end and I ended up changing all the hoses and the thermostat just for good measure. That said, I have yet to refill the system and test for leaks. That's for tonight's job. I have added a photo of the job half way through getting it all back together.

 

I would trade my youngest for an engine that clean,then again this is a part I haven't uncovered before. It will be clean before I fit the parts next Monday. 5 x 12 hour shifts to do now.
The parts arrived at 12.15pm today. Ordered them at 10 am yesterday,how good is that. They didn't even wait for the exchange pump to get to them. As soon as gave them a tracking number for my old pump the new one was on its way.

Well, this morning I headed for the garage armed with beer,water pump etc only to look at her 40 years of crap on the front of the engine.
Elinor's words were ringing in my ears.....anyway ,it was dark before I got to the new parts after 8 hours of scourer and solvent,steel wool etc. She knew I couldn't reassemble it without cleaning it.
Oh well,new parts will have to wait for another day. I did want to drive it tomorrow.
Slowly turning this $2000 crapper into a presentable car.

Those would be degreaser cans Elinor, I buy it by the box when it is on special for $1 a can. But as you can see from the pics below this car is chewing up the supply.

Finally got time today to look a fitting new water pump. Unpacked the box of goodies(that also had my handbrake pivot bolts I've been waiting 3 months for).
Only to find the pump is not complete or useable.
The spigot for the heater pipe was missing,and an outlet near the power steering pump bracket bolt hole had a plug that had been drilled out.
So off to my mate who works for the local hose Doctor(Pirtek), a bit of heat and easy out then fit a new blanking plug,then into the bin of out casts to make up a spigot.
All done within 15 minutes of leaving home instead of posting pump back to supplier.

 

Thats a bummer about the pump mate but lucky you got her back up and runnin.

Yep,on the road again after a quick late afternoon appointment with the "Hose Doctor". 9 day lay up.mainly due to lack of time. Sometimes you just have to go to work more than 3 days a week.

Grant, temp was showing above quarter after a 1km round trip to corner shop,never got anywhere near that before unless it was 35c plus in the middle of summer driving mountain roads. Seems more normal to me.



Big test tomorrow coming home from work in peak traffic,can't lane split in the XJ6 like the bike does.

I have no doubt it will all be sweet, I could have driven it for months with the pump leaking. Just that once I realised it was leaking it had to be fixed,and while I was down in that end of the engine bay I replaced belts,gaskets,thermostat,clamps,the older hoses, and some bolts that were less than adequate from corrosion.
just got to move on to the Jeep water pump now....

 

Isn't that the way though!! My brother calls it Project Creep; you start off with a seemingly straight forward task, should be relatively simple, and the further you go the more you find that Really should be done while you have it all apart, and it takes much longer than originally estimated.

It's good that you have all those friends and contacts too, Clarke. I don't know how many times we used to get a new part for one of the machines that was a Fits-All that didn't just bolt up like it was supposed to. Modifying it to work was Uncle's job. He could make a space shuttle from a roll of baling wire and a 2x4.

That temp is SWEET.

Luckily the 6 cylinder system has a tad more room for forgiveness than the V12.

I would be letting Doug know of the mishap there, coz if they dont get told they cant rectify it for the next guy who could be in Andamooka.

 

Emailed Doug some pics yesterday,and let him know it was up and running. At least I noticed before I put it in.
