Any of you who "cyber" know me, know I buy vehicles by gut feeling.
Today I rescued a 3 year old Cherokee that has suffered a non caring owner.
This model and mileage is selling for 18-23 K, I walked away parting with $11'300,lol. 74'700km. I started looking on Thursday for a KK Cherokee,wasn't planning on buying for a couple of weeks,or until I at least off loaded one car, now I have 3 six cylinder cars due for rego in December($880 each)
Didn't look at mileage or log book , myself and mates took an hour to crawl all over and under said beast,we drove it. All good, one oil leak I assume is rear main seal(easy fix).
Anyway, I started looking over my new garage dweller tonight. It turns out it has had 2 services in it's life. So that means 2 oil changes in 70k. Guess what,I'm buying oil and filter tomorrow . Trans has no dipstick so I will google a solution for that.
Here we go again..................
Log book shows Pre-delivery check,Service at 47'999km at one year old,next and final entry is a service at 56,386km at 2 years old. It is now showing 74,700km.
I love a challenge. I was prepared to part with 20k for the right KK cherokee. So I am ahead,just don't know yet if spending the 20k would have been a better option as this will become the daily driver for my wife since I(we) are selling her Mazda 3. She drives about 10 km a week as she walks to work and the kids catch buses these days. So I should be safe for a while!

I am not sure how thing work there with the "log book" but here in the states our manuals have areas in the back reserved for logging maintenance and such. I personally have never wrote in a manual but I have files of all receipts due to maintenance and up keep. So could it be that the PO kept up oil changes and never logged them into the book?

 

Yeh, I think I got lucky. Had to remove those crooked rego plates and straighten them up though,and use stainless m6 cup heads to refix them.(not ****)
The kids were surprised to see a new car in the garage ,since I only told them last night I was looking for another one.
My wife is surprised I didn't bring another bike home with it....I told her we didn't have a trailer to carry it.
BTW, I have already replaced the trailer plug to suit my trailers.

 

This guy didn't know how to open the bonnet, and the ambiant temp and miles per gallon were still set to "F" & galons, I changed it to "C" and km/100 before I drove home.
I don't think he was a car guy.

I do understand completely actually. You don't have enough to do! That's why you've bought another Unloved vehicle! You don't get enough wrenching time to keep your mind occupied, you got a little bit bored maybe, so you bought a new car. I see it all the time.

Hoping these 2 old cars will sell quickly.

I have been servicing my old Jeep from these guys for years,just didn't know about forums until I joined JF. I Was just searching online for answers and following the advice that popped up. Now I realise it was a really great Aus forum with totally local Knowledge.
Just to PC unsavvy to realise. I have learnt more about the net since joining JF than I learnt in the last 10 years.

Already had a local guy offer to come over and sort the 3 DVD screens and in dash gps and hdd etc..all new to me. Even the f'ing mirrors fold away and the seat moves back when I turn off the key.............Glad "Fireball" is my daily drive.
It's all too much.
Don't know how I manage a $10,000,000 printing machine with 3 pc's and 15 Tb of onboard info.(my 16gb Walkman is bliss)

 

You probably didn't jump right onto that $10,000,000 printing machine straight from a Gutenberg press, Clarke. It's called Gradualism. You doubtless will master your new Jeep with the same determination as you face all your other challenges.

He is the local indy Jeep guy I have been going to since 1997 for knowledge and parts.
This car came with no manuals,so the help he gave me today was great.
Setting the seat/mirror and radio setting to the drivers keys(mine and hers). I now know how the 3 dvd screens work together or solo,also remotes and wireless headphones.
Turning on the electronic parking assist,onboard tyre inflate/deflate facility etc.

We gave it a once over, 2 litres of oil needed and tyres a touch over inflated. Replaced the windscreen washer pipes and put the mandatory"Fire Extinguisher" in.



I always seem to have these local guys willing to help, but I do deliver cold 6 packs to them on Friday afternoons at random.
Strong beer economy in Australia. Cold amber happy juice will get you a long way for little cash separation.
I have put the tool boxes from the old Jeep in as I have heard Jeeps are unreliable(last one never let me down in 17 years),never can be too careful. I love not having the spare standing in the side of the boot.

It's not the prettiest interior for 3 years old,my 95' has better leather. But that might be the quality of the leather,the old one feels much thicker and more flexilble.
Went to an upholsterer today(another local contact from doing custom bike seats),turns out the top of the range Jeep has vinyl with leather inserts.$150 to repair drivers seat,$50 if I deliver the seat removed.
I did a temp repair on a broken panel in the boot,will source a knew one from a wrecker.

 

That looks nice and clean, Clarke. I like the two-tone gray. Perforated seats should be comfy too.

I've seen over in the JF Interior section that "Leather" seats no longer means Leather seats, but vinyl seats with leather inserts. It would see to be the case as that's Definitely vinyl on the edges of that seat.

It's too bad that a 3 year old vehicle has been trashed to this point; broken panel and cracked seat. I can't imagine you allowing those thing to happen in the first place, let alone continue unrepaired.

You would fix all that Immediately upon discovery.

Taking it away camping and hit some tracks to see if it is up to the task in the bush and on the beach. If it doesn't come up to expectation in off road ability the old one will be withdrawn from sale and this one cleaned up,serviced and sold.

 

Drove about 220km today, towing 1 tonne of gear trailer inclusive. Some steep hill work etc, all good. Averaged 13.1L/100km, not bad . The old Jeep doe's 17-18L/100KM.
Tows exceptionally well, forgot I was towing until I hit bumps. And sooo quite compared to the old one.
So cool not putting up the 2 extra rooms, should leave the kids at home more often.

Camping with WiFi, it's new to me.

I fail to see the allure of leaving behind a perfectly comfortable bed, a perfectly serviceable kitchen and a perfectly working bathroom to fight bugs, sleep rough, work 4 times as hard as I would at home for several Miserable days, and then pack all that stuff home again and have to clean it all up and put it away. And I haven't even mentioned yet eating cold food in the dirt, your very nice tent notwithstanding.

Farmers don't camp. If we want to hear crickets we open a window.

Hi Elinor, Took a while but I just saw this post.


It's not about leaving behind the luxury's. It is about being self sufficient and doing everything in your own time.
I would like to believe my kids have gained from the many camping trips we have had getting dirty,wet,cold and having fun getting up close to nature. Fishing,hiking, feeding Roo's and possums at the tent, hand feeding Cockatoo's and Kookaburra's at the tent. Not to mention the crocs and king browns we have seen up north. Or the funnel web spiders in your shoes in the Blue Mountains.
My daughter was stalked by a 2.5 metre Goanna when she could hardly walk, and they worry about Dingo's! These things have claws like Freddy Krueger.

Why would you want to stay in a hotel or resort.
