Default Rego Costs around the Area?OZ/NZ

Reading Melbourne's Herald R/E the Vic. Governments grab for cash with a reference to applying admission fees to National Parks they went on to say Vic's pay twice as much for Car Registration as NSW.

I had the Jag Reg papers recently and I live very rural so TAC (compulsory 3rd party) is the lowest compared to a Vic city driver.

My Reg was $605.00 per annum.
So exactly what are others paying for their Registration around Australia/NZ ?

Is NSW half this cost or is the journalist misinformed?

$605 including CTP? If so you're well ahead of me! I'm about to renew and the cheapest CTP I can get (many thanks to Shannons!) is around $490. Rego is $470, but I don't know why we call it rego when the registration fee is just $60 and the motor vehicle tax makes up the rest. Plus I get slugged $100 extra a year because my number plates, although standard design, have 4 letters and 2 numbers instead of 3 of each.

So all up this year I'm looking at around $1.1k (with the roadworthy inspection fee thrown in). It's a lot of cash, and that's before I even turn the key!

$1100.00 Dave? Wow no wonder the ACT has gold plated roads. I wasn't meaning to suggest that $605 was expensive for the privilege of driving on our connected potholes.

More just curious what it costs around our area. I am lead to believe that Qld goes by engine capacity/amount of cylinders?

That's NSW rego, and I can assure you that the roads in NSW are not gold plated!

Here the motor vehicle tax component of rego is based on vehicle weight. No surprise that the XJR is in the top bracket at $411. If it was between 1155 and 1504 kgs it'd cost $270. 976 to 1154 kgs is $220, and under 976 kgs is $191. I'm not sure any Jaguar would make it into the cheapest category!

My NSW inner city rego (renewed last week) for a 2.5l X-Type is as follows:

Pinkslip (roadworthy) - $36.40
Greenslip (CTP) - $563.06
Registration fee - $60.00
Motor vehicle Tax - $270.00

Total - $929.46

Regards

Rob

My X350 XJR in Sydney is;

$525 CTP (via Shannons)
$60 Registration Fee
$411 Motor Vehicle Tax

EDIT

In answer to your question Neil, NSW has the highest registration & CTP costs in the country, the journalist is very much mistaken...

The licensing fee in NZ is $280.55, and a WOF (warrant of fitness) check once a year if first registered after 2000, otherwise twice a year, will cost about $40, but remember that we have HUGE taxes on petrol here, AND GST (15%) is calculated on the total petrol cost. A tax on a tax in other words? As the Americans say "You can't fight city hall".

They get you in the end.

That would seem a better deal. Even what ever petrol costs there per litre ($1.65 here ATM 95 ron)
You would have approx $800 of free fuel per year then compared to NSW. Unless if it's $10 per litre and you only get 1 tank or so.

Hi, just been through the process of registering my xj6 a couple of weeks ago in Qld

Yes,we go by the number of cylinders
4 cly=666.50
6 cly=830
8 cly= 1008.50
12 cly= 1115.70

These prices include CTP, but a rwc only needed when transferring into your name is around $100, but it's only once in the life you own the car unless dept transport officers see a defect and send you for a main roads inspection. I do remember in NZ when I was a teenager had to WOF (warrant of fitness) 6 monthly.
Qld also has a 3% stamp duty (on purchase price or market value, whichever is higher,of course)if the vehicle has not been registered in your name before.
By the way rego was $72 dollars in NZ when I left there in 1988,and half price for classics(40 y/o +)

Thanks Clarke. So who came up with that ridiculous scenario?
My 3.2 Litre has a smaller footprint than the most popular V6 Commodore but has 8 pots.

Common sense would dictate capacity rather than how it's configured.

I have to agree with NZ 'roadworthy' regs. Buying a car in Vic is like banana country where a 'roadworthy' is needed to transfer the car as a one off.
20 years later you can still be driving a rusted out dangerous heap of junk without question.
Going by a recent 'blitz' with number plate readers it appears that in my local town registration is optional too! Victoria has stopped issuing registration labels that were fitted/attached to the windscreen.

Hi Neil.
yep 6 monthly WOF is a good thing, when I was living in NZ 25 years ago you go for your check up at the local gov testing station. They were reasonable, maybe say "before next time fix that rust spot,or new brake pads on front",cars were always more or less safe to drive.
In Qld I've had my XJ Cherokee for 16 years, bought it 2 years old. Never been checked for road worthy since. I keep my vehicles self maintained to a fairly high standard (see my garage, haven't paid a mechanic in 25 years except for air-con work)but would hate to think what some people are driving after 16 years.
