Does your car have manually operated handbrake (requires lifting a long lever) or an automatic, electric park brake with a small paddle in the middle of the console?
Mate here (i tend his fleet) purchased an X200 (2001 MY) S Type V6 yesterday.
On the short trip home, it was driving "sort of fine", so I made him stop at my place of employment and BUY a new battery. We changed it in the carpark. It did make a difference, and there were NO codes prior to disconnection.
NO IDEA how old the battery in there was, and dont really care. The battery is OUT of any diagnostic thinking for a few years yet.
It is now at my place and ALL the fuids are out of it, new going in today, plus some other little tidy up things. It is at 116000kms, so youngish still.
Hope it works out. Clean the clamps, tighten but not daftly tight, smear of vaseline over the lot when done - keeps damp out.
Oh - wait - the metal clamp holding the current battery in is often hard to get off. Wire brush the thread that comes out below the boot, penetrating oil (not WD40, it's poor for this), and should come off.
Don't go mad on the new battery. Try www.tayna.co.uk for a lead acid, vented (type 017 or maybe 019 I think). Dimensions of mine (hefty for the STR) LxWxH 353x175x190mm. umm, this'll be in the Stickies...
You don't need one as hefty but don't get a pathetic one.
Hello All. unhooked the batter to clean the terminals, and the car started making a bleeping sound. Would last about 30 seconds and a gap of 10 seconds and start bleeping again. Reconnected the battery, unlocked the doors and the alarm went off.
Put key into the ignition and got a warning light telling me to put the parking break on. Pulling up the lever made no difference, when i started the car and put it into gear, it wont move as it is evident that the parking break is actually already on and now wont release.
I remember several cases here a few years ago when the electronic park brake locked up due to a failing battery. A new battery fixed the problem (once the owners followed the park brake reset procedure after installing the new battery). Sounds to me like your current battery is essentially toast....
Thanks for your insights, and a strange as it may seem the idea of my battery being toast is actually a good thing, based on the other issues I am having.
Cheers

Any one had this before?
Cheers
Yes. This is a standard issue when the battery is disconnected. The parking brake needs to be recalibrated which is a simple procedure:
Putting new battery in today. Is there a correct order to disconnect and then reconnect the leads? Also, how do you stop the bleeping noise once its disconnected?
Thanks
You can think the order through. Imagine using a metal tool (spanner etc) and it slips causing a connection. One order is safe, the other not (and a shorted battery is a fire & explosive risk so it really matters).
A slip that can short is likely to hit a post and the body rather than both posts.
So.... on a car with earth to -ve like ours, connect that last. (Similar reasoning would say disconnect it first.)
Remember to connect the vent tube - probably first as it's smallish.
