Most operate at start up but usually with a few minutes all dead. Sound like heat getting to them at some point after engine warms up? Or what else might cause.?

 

Dont know if its the same in an S2, but in an S3 the dash gauges share a common fuse (no4 in main panel). Mine started developing the wanders and have improved after a clean. Might be worth giving then a clean up.

Up above the Tacho??? is an instrument stabiliser, and they are Lucas, and do fail.

Easiest way is to remove the dash top and reach in.

Option 2, push the tacho IN and rotate counterclockwise?, and pull out, then reach in and see what gives.

Its been a while, but all my S2's had issues like that and it ws that stabiliser and/or wiring connections, and good old bad earths.

 

I had a similar issue to this, where my battery gauge would start then just completely stop. My issue was the connection on the back wasn't on properly, looked like it may have been tampered with.

Hardly science as I couldn't fix out exactly what was what in that tiny space, but a clean out behind the dash with the gauges out seems to have fixed all the gauges at once. Not sure what I did however.
