2016 XF-S Engine ON/Off Switch
I just bought my first Jaguar (in over 30 years!) an am enjoying the experience immensely except for one minor issue/question. Namely, when I return home after a trip and I stop the car followed by, in sequence, 1.) placing the transmission in Park, 2.) setting the parking brake and 3.) releasing my seat belt and finally, 4.) opening the driver's door, the engine AUTOMATICALLY shuts off--80% of the time. The other 20% of the time, I need to manually press the On/Off button on the dash to shut down the engine. Why does this happen seemingly at random? Is there some condition, that I am not aware of, that prevents the automatic shut down of the engine? Can someone explain this phenomenon?

That's a feature called Driver Exit (only available when auto start/stop is enabled).
From user manual:
To prevent the vehicle from being inadvertently left in a driveable condition, the vehicle detects when a driver is not present, and automatically switches off the ignition system.
If Drive (D), Sport (S) or Neutral (N) is selected, the Driver exit feature switches the vehicle's ignition off if the following conditions exist:
The driver's seat belt is unbuckled, and,
The brake pedal is released.
If Park (P) is selected, the Driver exit feature switches the vehicle's ignition off, if the driver's seat belt is unbuckled.

Thanks for your response. I had a feeling that it was a feature of the vehicle, I just hadn't been able to establish a pattern of precursor 'events' that had to occur prior to the vehicle automatically switching off the engine. I will pay closer attention to those precursor events now and see if the vehicle operates consistently. THANK YOU!

I hear you. Not sure I love the feature (it's new to me too) but I think I'm leaning towards yes. That said, a few times I've unintentionally re-started the car because as I'm hitting the button to turn off, the car senses my exit and does it a nano-second before I do. I think it's just a matter of adjusting my somewhat automatic actions. Enjoy your new cat!
