Default Real versus fake synthetic oil

Hi guys,
doing some reading, i learned that TRUE synthetic oil has to read, 100% synthetic oil, not " full synthetic oil ".
Full synthetic oil is grade 3 and 100% synthetic oil is grade 4.
Back in the nineties, the law changed and permitted the oil brand companies to use the term synthetic for grade 3 oil, which is actual refined petroleum dinosaur oil. Grade 4 synthetic oil is created in a lab. So what the hell is in our cars, used by Jaguar. Is it true 100% synthetic oil or just a super refined Dyno oil.
Thanks

So you're saying that it isn't all about the additive package? 🙄

Default I don't know ...

Yes, the additive content is important but what I've explained is fact, so i don't know what Jaguar is using. Grade 3 or grade 4.
regular oil being Dyno oil is grade 2, basic motor oil.

Default 100% synthetic oil ...

What you are showing is not the JLR approved oil (which is also classified as "Full Synthetic".

This is the approved oil:

I use Amsoil with the full approval of my Jaguar dealer and yes it is made from Synthetic base stock. The master mechanic at my dealer was pretty sure Castrol edge was from synthetic base stock too, and that was why it was more expensive than the other castrol ..

We have used Amsoil on our equipment and cars and trucks for close to 20 years and used to do lab tests ... all good over time.

And no I am not worried about my warranty.

Default There is absolutely a difference between the two

The one states, full....
and the other states, 100%>
If it were possible, all those with, FULL SYNTHETIC, would also use 100% synthetic, but because it's a business/corporation, they do the want to be sued for mislabeling the product. That's a fact!
I hope someone can chime in, as there are several smart guys here knowledgable about cars and motor oil.
Thanks

Cause Jag doesn't believe that 100% synthetic is necessary.

You could always email Castrol to ask if it's 100% synthetic. There are a number of other brands that now meet the JLR spec.

I always understood the 'law' change to be a percentage of synthetic material allowed the "synthetic" advertising claim which allowed group 3 dyno oils with a heavy % of synthetic additives to qualify vs. group 4 which was made from synthetic base stock.

Could you list the brands? The only one I saw (Mobil 1) was only available in Europe.

Hmm, it was discussed here recently. There was another brand I've never heard of, plus Mobil 1, as I recall.

While I can not vouch for the integrity of this web site it is an interesting read.

According to them even 100% synthetic motor oil can contain up to 20% dino oil.

However, you have to be patient, this discussion is toward the bottom of the page.

All about Synthetic Motor Oil

Because Full Synthetic motor oil is just EXTRA REFINED dino crude oil with additives and is label a grade 3 oil. Not a grade 4 oil.

After reading through the whole thing, and thinking, well, is there nothing I can do?? The pitch comes: Only SynLube™ Lube−4−Life® can save you!
So all the stuff above may be true (and sucks if it is) but with the pitch, I say, aha, that is their motivation...
Thank you for posting though, interesting read!

Hi Guys,
Chemist by trade, so I've always been interested in synthetic oils, also race cars, and would ONLY use synthetic oils in race cars, street cars...

Anyway, the internet article linked is pretty accurate. The base for "synthetic" oil is dino oil, yes, highly refined, but dino oil. BUT it has undergone a synthesis process, which for a chemist, means that it has undergone some chemical reaction, rather than the more laymans meaning which is that it is man made. I can tell you now, that anything with long chain hyrdocarbons comes from crude oil or in some cases plant oils (biodiesel), it's not feasible to manufacture this when you can pump it out of the ground.

The there is probably very few "real" synthetic oils, probably none for automotive use.

Yes, it's inventive branding and probably costs no where near as much to produce as they sell it for, but in the overall scheme of things it's a minor cost. I throw away six litres of Mobil 1 after every second race weekend.

So go with the recommended oil.

Cheers
Stu
