Hehehe... it works.

Short answer is, the 2009MY has a different software in it to the 2007-2008MY cars, and the Reverse Camera is supported in that software (also DAB support too).

We don't know if the 2009MY software will work in the 2007-2008 touchscreens, or exactly how to flash that software into the older screens, but we hope to find out next week!

Steve,

Since it now appears that the XF touchscreen swap will work with the 2009 model (4.2L with iPod connectivity), would you be willing to make a kit with your excellent instructions? Or is the potential market too small to justify the effort?

It's not an XF touchscreen in my car!

And... this is only possible with a reprogramming using SDD...

Steve, please disregard my Post #62. My mistake, I misunderstood.

Cambo, can you post details of the SDD programming and additional hardware necessary for rear camera functionality that my indy mechanic can use? On a scale of 1 to 10, how difficult is it? What is the approximate cost of parts? And approximately how long should it take? Thanks to you, I can see light at the end of the tunnel!

Could I get a 2009 screen from a Portfolio or is yours a unique one off?

Well Cambo, if you still want a guinea pig on it, I no longer have my XK screen. Had a scratch so I kept the XF screen and it's loaded with the XK 07 software. But I'd be happy to test it for the forum. I think I have two XF screens actually.

Let me know.

That may not be necessary, give us a week, we've got a couple of tests lined up with an 07-08 touchscreen.

After a lot of messing around, we now have the 2009 software in an original 2008 touchscreen and it works!

Reverse camera, DAB, and.... TV too!

The software flash itself takes about 2 and half hours to run!

I have a spare touchscreen on the way, so I guess running some sort of exchange program might be possible. But with the whole programming routine taking several hours, it's a lot of time & effort to make it work...

Looks like the colour scheme is updated too, with all blue. Any other "new" features added? Also the US does not have TV or DAB so any potential compatibility issues?

Impressive work !

Do you think it might be feasible to capture the entire programming sequence data stream?

I or someone else could then potentially could then create a single purpose OBDII module that plugs in the OBDII port and performs the upgrade automatically.

Well SDARS/Sirius and HD-Radio retrofit is also possible. With the later software you also have the possibility to retrofit the Portable Audio Interface which gives you USB and iPod connectivity that is fully controlled via the touchscreen, these were first introduced in the 2009MY. But it would appear that the Audio Head Unit would also need a software update in 2008MY or earlier cars for that to work.

Any info on this! (reverse camera)-827be8bfe11dea75cc4aa17fb89117b0.jpg

Thanks!

The gentlemen talking in the video has the know-how and contacts to develop a standalone flashing tool, and it's been a topic of discussion for some time now already, however the software update to the screen (and other modules) is only one piece of the puzzle.

As I mentioned just before it could be that a software update to the Audio Head Unit will be needed to add other functions.

Plus the CCF must be updated to enable all these new functions as well, and that is much more involved since it means a flash of the PCM, CJB and IPC too. For the time being SDD does all of this (once it's unlocked) but it does need a lot of workarounds to do what's needed.

It's a not a small or simple undertaking...

Just from a time it takes perspective this is already an expensive upgrade, if you add the cost of developing a new dedicated tool for this, I don't see it being economically viable.

Honestly I can imagine it's already at the same cost level as an external GVIF box... but not everyone wants to add hardware like that...

I have Sirius but do not have HD radio - is this also a module or is it strictly software? Also have the ACM iPod/USB kit already installed, basically the same limited functionality as the one I installed in the Daimler SuperV8, how does it differ from the one standard from MY2009 and on? If it is full Apple/ipod integration with meta tags that may be of equal or even more interest than a camera.

HD-Radio is an additional module, also some additional wiring (the AM/FM antennas run through the HD-Radio module, and then on to the head unit).

The Portable Audio gives you full control over the iPod/Phone, as well as the USB stick. I use the USB stick more, the folders on the stick are all named on the screen, the tracks are all named & numbered, it's miles ahead of the old ACM in the early X150's and the ACM in the X350, S-Type, etc...

I'll try to get some more photo's of the Portable Audio in action next time i'm in the car...

The components for the Portable Audio system aren't that cheap though, even 2nd hand, but they can be pulled out of an XF.

Wow!
Your persistence paid off.
So, 'trickle down to the masses', will be a challenge, but thanks for putting a light at the end of the tunnel!

Wow, that is fantastic! What parts do I need? The Audio interface module listed is less than $100 USD.

This mod is fighting me right to the very end...

Today I worked on the car to finish off the installation of the camera to the boot lid and get the wiring in properly.

However it's not finished yet, I need a different type of camera. I'll explain why later, but here's what it looks like;

You see how this camera has a ring of LEDs around it, that's the issue.

When I ordered the camera from China, the picture in the listing showed one without LEDs, and this is what we need.

Why?

Because the camera does not give a video output unless the LEDs are lit up. There is a separate 12V supply for the LEDs, but that obviously powers the camera too.

The way that the factory camera works, well actually how the camera function in the touchscreen works, is that the picture stays up on the screen even when you shift from reverse to drive, and it goes away once you are over a certain speed.

This means you can't use the reverse light as a power source for the camera, because once you shift out of reverse, the camera turns off, and you're left with a blue screen.

The camera needs an ignition-switched 12V supply. But if you wire it up this way, the LEDs on the camera are permanently lit...

So I'm waiting on another camera to come from China now, this one I'm certain does not have LEDs, since many of the buyers posted pictures of the camera they received as part of their feedback for the seller.

Will be a couple more weeks until I get this finished now... 🙄
