Hello,
I just bought at welshent.com a new coolant expansion tank, mine was too much worn out and losing fluid from everywhere.
now I got a question.
The return metal pipe to the upper part of the expansion tank the one close to the cap looks weird to me. The orientation angle is wrong it points inside the edge of the expansion tank. How can I fit the hose in it? that metal pipe is soldered and won't move.
Should I file the edge of the expansion tank in proximity of that metal pipe ?

I'd say it was mis-manufactured. Send it back !

I think I will use a tool to bend the pipe little bit.

 

funny, mine does not have any tubing at the neck, maybe they changed it for 1985?

 

Do you need to put a pipe on there ? It is a drain pipe to ground if the pressure cap blows off, so might serve you better if the coolant ends up in that channel.
At least you'll see the problem immediately !

 

It's intended to supply coolant to an overflow tank located within the wing, front of tyre, and then retrieve the coolant after the engine is shut down. The coolant exchanged occupies about the top inch of the brown tank...if you fill it below that level there is no overflow, and the second tank isn't needed. That's what I did, having fitted the brown tank but not the black overflow tank to my Series 1.

Agreed that letting coolant it hit the flange is a good idea of you don't use the second tank. If you do want to use the factory setup, I believe that sawing off a bit of the pipe would allow access for attaching a hose...there's never any pressure in it, so attachment isn't critical. IMHO.

 

my 1984 brown tank does not have such metal neck or mouth inserted into the plastic mouth. The CAP simply screws onto the tank's mouth.

I do not think this tank is for a Series 3 XJ-6 unless the design was changed for the 1985 model-year. I do think this is a Series 2 tank.

 

My series 2 has this stainless steel tank and I believe early series 3 had the same......

Correct.

The plastic tank used on the Series III was part of several cooling system changes circa 1983. Plastic tank, different thermostat housing, different fan clutch, etc.

Earlier Series IIIs used the same stuff as Series II cars

Although the brown plastic tank ion my car is gone, the "catch" tank behind the left out board lamp remains. The filler neck on my car, not original, has that pipe. It is connected to the "catch" tank.


My take on these repo tans s that they are flawed. Why is pure speculation.


My solution would be as mentioned, cut it or bend it and hook up the hose.


Letting coolant "blow off" to go to ground is not good. The glycol is poison to many critters, and worse, it is sweet and attracts them
And, of course, chemicals in to the environment.

thank you yes I will try to cut the pipe

 

so I did replace the expansion tank myself. New job for me it took more than 1 hour.
I do not know how much should I tighten the nuts on the expansion tank. I would not want to wreck it. But if I tighten them little bit the edge tends to bend little bit, if I do not tighten them they seems to be too loose. Here is a picture of how they are tight now on the new tank. any hints are welcome. Thank you.

 

the washers should be oblong, so they distribute the torque sideways.

something is not right, my tank is from 1983 and it is not distorted like that. Loosen those bolts before the plastic takes a set. I' will post pictures of mine in two days.

yes I do not have the oblong washers. I hve only one oblong in the other side where there is the overflow hose and cap.
Do you know where may I find them ?

Jaguar Oval Washer, E-Type Bonnet, Etc., Zinc, 1-1/2 x 3/4 - BD542/3

 

contact David at Everyday XJ, he will have them. The ones you found look too big.
