But didn't expect that it would come in pieces - clearly its been awhile since I replaced a thermostat on anything, but I don't remember them being a $45 part and I don't remember having to put one together... far as I know they're just little UFO-shaped things....
So does anyone think I may have gotten the wrong part? I am sure I can figure it out once I take the car apart, but I would rather know what I am dealing with - is this normal? is there a clearer diagram of how these go together?
here are the parts as I received them:
guess i thought most thermostats looked like this:
Oh my.. IMO, part #15 would have been the best choice. I can't provide assistance on the assembly of the part but I do know that you have to cram it all into #17 and twist it. At least that's what I gleaned from inspecting the inside of mine, which had blown apart almost entirely. Hopefully someone here has refurbished theirs before and can be more helpful than I.
EDIT: Here's my best guess. I happen to still have my bits and pieces

Thanks NH - yeah, probably should have just gone with 15, but lots of plates in the air money-wise, so hoping this will work - if not, i can suck it up and just buy the assembly... Looks like it should be fairly obvious once I get 17 off.
Sorry I can't help you on this from memory - but it will be obvious when you take the housing apart. In the past I have purchased the entire housing and thermostat together and it was apparent how the assembly goes together. Good luck!
here is my best guess after reading the post that woox4 referred to:
That spring takes a hell of a lot of force to compress, hope that assembly is strong enough to hold it together - i suppose it must be; otherwise I'll just get the whole thing and send this back. Or take the old one-piece out and try to match it down at AutoZone.
From my other thread earlier this week, I did also get that upper hose assembly, so perhaps I'll document my steps and post that when I go to do it. Thanks guys!
