I bought a thermostat for my 2006 XJR. Has anyone changed an X350 XJR thermostat and is this what it is supposed to look like? As you can see, what I received is a three piece affair. The separate seal seems to be about three inches in diameter, while the thermostat (AJ811788) is about 1 1/4" diameter.

When I asked about this, I was told that the AJ87696 called for in the JEPC was superseded to the AJ811788

What say those of you that have actually changed one? I was expecting a thermostat similar to what was in my 99 XJ8

I have not done an XJR, but I have done both my 4.2 N/As. The thermostat is basically the same set up I think.
If you look at your thermostat cover/outlet pipe you will see the bolt circle is the same diameter as the gasket you have.

The fun part is assembling the thermostat pieces!

I recently changed my thermostat in my r. The one I took out looked like a regular 1 piece thermostat and didn't have that spring. The local auto parts store carries it as well. It's easy to change under 10 minutes.

Mike,

In case these are helpful, here's the parts diagram for the supercharged cars from the Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC), which you can download from this forum and install on your computer:

And for those with normally-aspirated cars, here's the diagram:

Cheers,

Don

So, it appears that in 2004, Blackkat's XJR used a traditional type thermostat like what I had in my 99 XJ8.

By 2006, based on VIN, the elbow (#2 in Don B's illustration) apparently changed to what is seen in the photos provided by WooX4 in his S-Type and uses the multi-piece thermostat.

The JEPC illustration was confusing in that it appeared to show the Blackkat style for the XJR but the multi-piece for the NA cars.

I am still collecting hoses so it will be a while before I post photos of what mine looked like.
