Automatic drivers seat on XJR
I have a strange problem with my XJR drivers seat, the controls work perfectly back and forth, etc. When I get out of the car and open the door the seat moves back automatically for me to get out. When I then close the door with the key in the lock the seat then moves forward to the memory position, so far so good. However, if I get out of the car and lock it and then unlock it and get in putting the key in the ignition, the seat stays in the back position and does not move forward. It seems therefore that the motors are working OK just the memory seems to be forgotten when the car is locked. Any ideas?
Do you really need this feature? If not, you can disable it by keping the switch for the steering column/pedals on one of the positions allowing the settings, and not the central position.
I have disabled this feature like this because I was never a fan of it.
Best regards,
Thomas

I like the feature very much and so I'll try a reset of the system by disconnecting the -ve battery pole for 30 minutes and see if that helps. I'll also replace the battery in the key fob and try it with the spare key. I'll keep you posted.

I don't use the feature because I don't like it. I do move the wheel up manually when I exit, then push the memory button when I return. Being someone who can shop the big & tall stores i find it harder to get out when the seat is all the way back, I have to climb around the door frame.
Question, because you don't mention the column: Does your steering column move to the upper position when the seat moves back? It should, and then both column and seat should return to your memory position when you insert the key.
Still, just for you, I went out and set my column control knob to the center position and tested how it works. Whichever memory position I've selected is what it returns to when i put the key in. It doesn't matter if I remove the key and immediately insert it, or if I actually get out, lock the car, then unlock and get back in. It works like you're expecting it to work: seat moves back and column moves up when the key comes out, and everything returns when the key goes back in.
You might be able to compromise by just pressing the memory button after you insert the key and see if that brings the seat back into position for you. If that works, then the memory isn't being lost, it's just not being called by the key for some reason.
Something occurs to me as I type this. You do have the positions set on at least one of the two memory buttons, don't you? It may be that when you remove the key and immediately reinsert it, without getting out, the system returns to where it started, but once the door is opened, there's no starting point if you haven't set a memory button. Similar to the window buttons working after you pull the key, but not after the door is opened. Even if the memory was set sometime in the past, set it again and see of the exit/entry behavior returns to normal.
To set, put everything where you want it, press the M button, which lights up, and then one of the number buttons. You'll hear a ding to confirm that the button has been set.
If you have two key fobs, I don't know how to do it, but they can be set to tell the car one of the memory positions when you unlock with the fob. I discovered that accidentally when I misplaced my fob and had to use my spare for a couple of days. (The original turned up in my pants pocket before dumping it into the washer...)

Thanks for your efforts Wfooshee, in the meantime I have done 3 things and the seat now works perfectly as it used to.
1. Battery disconected for 30 minutes (needed to reprogram automatic windows aftwerwards)
2. Replaced key fob batteries
3. Moved set with buttons fully forward then fully backwards.
Which of these 3 did the trick I don't know but I'm happy again! Many thanks again to Florida - just got back from 2 week holiday with my son and family in Cape Coral and had a great time!
