Unhappy Jaguar S-Type no lights on dash, not starting.

Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone may be able to offer some assistance, I have owned my 2002 Jaguar S-Type 4.0 V8 pre-facelift for 4 years now but recently it has developed an issue where it is not starting. I put my key in the ignition and turn to the first position and all the warning lights flash up as normal but go out in a split second and does not even attempt to turn over when they key is turned again. I have checked the battery voltage which is normal as well as the earth connection and the fuses in the boot and am now at a loss as to what the issue could be.

How have you checked the battery voltage?
And what do you call normal?
It sounds like a dead battery to me.
Note that if you use a multi-meter, where the internal batteries are low, you may get all kinds of readings, incl. measuring a healthy voltage on the car battery, which is in reality pretty dead.

Hi,

battery voltage has been checked by a mechanic, I have also charged the battery just in case it is the battery that is the issue. What seems strange is that the lights on the dash light up very briefly and go straight off with not even an attempt to start (only airbag light stays on permantly). I was thinking some sort of ignition barrel issue tbh, but not sure so just wanted to gauge if anyone has any idea on here?

One point of clarification: Was the voltage checked with the battery under load? Or was it checked at rest before turning the key?

To check under load, you'll need a helper (to turn the key) but this test is very simple to do. I have had several occasions (on various vehicles) where the battery voltage looked fine at rest. As soon as a load was applied, the voltage dropped way off.

I'd suggest running this simple check before trying anything else.

Hi,

I'll give that a go, thanks. Do you think perhaps it could be a possible problem with the PATS as there is zero turning over whatsoever?

Here's how the PATS indicator behaves when no faults are stored:

First, lock the car with the key fob. Press the lock button a second time to set the alarm system. The horn should chirp once. Watch the little red light. It should flash once every few seconds or so to show the system is armed. Now press the key fob unlock button twice to unlock all the doors. The red light should go out. Now hop in the driver's seat and turn the key to RUN (Not start yet). The red light should come on solid ONCE for about 3 seconds and then go out. If it flashes anything after that, you've got a stored fault.
