US-Spec XJL Imported to Germany MCU/Navigation and Speed Limiter Questions
Hello fellow Jaguar enthusiasts,
First of all, thank you for accepting me into your forum!
I could really use some advice and experience from people who have dealt with US-spec Jaguars in Europe.
A little background first:
About two years ago, I imported a Jaguar XJL from the United States to Germany. The car was simply too nice to leave behind. It has since been fully registered and approved for road use in Germany, but I am still dealing with a few US-market limitations.
I also have an open support ticket with JLR regarding some of these questions. The ticket has been active for roughly 1.5 years, but unfortunately I have never received a useful response.

Now to my questions:
1. Navigation / MCU Conversion
The factory navigation system is essentially unusable for me because I cannot install European map data. From what I have learned, US-spec Jaguars use a different map format than European cars.
I have been trying to find out whether it is possible to replace the MCU and/or related modules with European-spec units while maintaining compatibility with the rest of the vehicle.
Has anyone successfully converted a US-spec X351/XJL infotainment system to European specifications?
As an alternative, I have considered installing an Android screen as an overlay while keeping the original Jaguar system functional. I still want access to all factory functions and honestly enjoy the original Jaguar interface.
If anyone has experience with Android retrofit systems, I would appreciate recommendations.
2. 125 mph (200 km/h) Speed Limiter:
Since the car was originally built for the US market, it is limited to 125 mph (200 km/h).
Several people in the US have recommended VelocityAP tuning, which supposedly removes the limiter through a software flash. However, I would prefer to avoid modifications that could create additional certification or inspection issues in Germany.
I have already visited a Jaguar dealer in the Netherlands. They attempted to raise the limit to 300 km/h using Jaguar's official systems, but the vehicle still remains limited to 200 km/h.
Has anyone successfully removed the speed limiter on a US-spec X351/XJL in Europe?
Was it done through Jaguar software, module replacement, SDD/Pathfinder coding, VelocityAP, or another solution?
Any ideas, experiences, or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Loran glad to hear from Jaguar guys across the pond!
You did not tell us what year car you have? It does make a difference. My 2014 navigation is completely obsolete now with the last update being around 2020 or so. But looking at JLR they offer updates for the 2016-2018 XJ's (Where is the last year 2019?). If yours is a later model you might be able to update.
Does your car have InControl Touch? Those systems are the only ones being supported by JLR anymore. I don't know what year these maps cover either?
You can see the drop down menu's and that's what I used in the past. Are you sure you can't install the Europe maps? Might be worth a try?
Surprised about the maps because back before my system went obsolete around 2020. I remember being able to choose what maps I wanted installed. I have not seen that different hardware is used depending on the market. Different hardware depending on the year of manufacture for sure.
Again without a year model of car it's hard to say? Not sure about the 125 mph limit? I guess different models had different limits. My 2014 XJR came with a 174 mph limit stock. In my tune I have it set to 199 mph. While I would like to think I can break this speed at some future race it's very unlikely I ever will! Yes my car is modded.
Right now I have hit a bit over 174 mph in the standing mile. The car has more in it I just need a longer runway!
I use and recommend VAP. I have their tune and lower pulley as well as their data logging software for optimizing my tune. No complaints but be aware there are more than one tuning company for these cars.
Also be aware that the car does record changes in the programming and I have not found a way to stop or erase that information. You can see it in SDD for sure. Had it tuned while under warranty but never had any problems with JLR dealer service. I don't think they even check? I would be surprised that any government had the knowledge to see this but again who knows?

I'm terribly sorry. I'm new to this forum (I have previously only used the German and Dutch forums), and I was under the impression that the car model would automatically be shown with the post.
My car is a 2017 XJL AWD 3.0 V6 Petrol.
I will definitely try updating the maps myself. Thank you for the suggestion! The JLR dealer in Groningen told me they had tried it, but it didn't work because of the data format. Of course, it doesn't hurt to try it myself.
I was also told that the 125 mph limit is a standard US speed limiter. The dealer said they changed it to 300 km/h (186 mph), but that had no effect. They also changed the display from mph to km/h, which did work.
Trying this myself shouldn't hurt either! If that doesn't work, I'll go with the VAP.
I'm fairly new to all of this, so any tips on how to approach it would be greatly appreciated.
You're always welcome to visit our Autobahn and test the claimed 199 mph. 😉
By the way, have you found an alternative solution for the outdated maps on your car?
Did you manage to update the system or replace the display with something more modern, or have you simply learned to live with the original setup? I'd be interested to hear what route you took, as I'm currently exploring my options. Because spending 130€ for something outdated doesn΄t sound that nice ^^

I can only say what I have done. I never found a solution for the obsolete navigation system updates. There was some talk that the Volvo system also used the same format and that we could use those update files on our Jags. I never followed up on this.
Next yes I installed a large Android screen from Canavie a number of years ago. Here is my extensive thread with pictures from 2018 when I started the project. Pretty happy with it still and it all works even years after the install. My main requirement was to keep 100% of the stock features/controls and add onto that. What's nice is the stock system is untouched so the car does not even know anything is installed. Next the OEM system has a fan and duct setup to keep the IP and the Navigation screen cool. Most after market screens do NOT do this! So be aware. You do need this cooling.
Finally things have progressed so the boot time and speed and memory of the Android screens have gotten better. I do have a small complaint about the time it takes the system to boot up but it's fairly minor. My other complaint is reading the screen in direct sunlight and the amount of finger prints the screen collects. There are protector screens that claim to improve both of these problems. I have not added anything to the screen yet. Also consider installing a car front end app to the Android tablet. There are a lot of these out there now. These screens are all Chinese made so the graphics are strange and watch out if you reset the unit to factory specs! It will all be in Chinese! Yea that took a bit to figure out but was no problem.
Currently I have been talking to Andy at Canavie about replacing what I have with a more powerful unit. I may still do this.
Now with the Android the entire world is open as far as what to use. Waze and Google maps plus any and all Android apps you want. Like Carplay and Android Auto. Mirror your phone and play music thru your phone too. Mine is now out of date and there are newer faster units out there.
Here is what Andy has recommended. Now I don't want any of the crummy screens that replace the AC controls. No need for that plus lots of problems with things that don't work anymore. Be aware the JLR used different screens (Single and Dual View) and two different vendors for the stock systems. You need to know if you have a Harman or Bosch system. And there were different size screens installed in the XJ depending on the year of the car. My 2014 only had the small 8" screen and the later XJ's got a 10.5 inch screen
I seem to remember that top speed was limited to 125mph when a XJ was delivered with all season tires and the limiter was turned off is performance tires were fitted when delivered. As one that never did SDD could there be a setting for tires fitted?
Yes I have heard that explanation too and it makes sense. But I know my 2014 XJR had a factory limit set at 174 mph.
Note what Jaaag_drivah posted above using SDD. Since I went with VAP I have not looked in SDD to see where this is located. I have not gotten brave enough to edit my CCF yet so can't offer any help with that.

The US 2014XJ Model Product Brief.shows SC V6 models with speed limiter of 121mph, SC V8 models with speed limiter of 155mph unless equipped with all season tires when speed limiter was at 121mph. The XJR came only with 20in forged wheels and a speed limiter at 174mph
My 2014 XJL 5.0 has been up to about 215 kph ( about 135mph)
The 2019 Canadian XJ brochure shows all SC V6 models with speed limiter at 195kph and the SC V8 575 models set at 280kph (these roughly translate to 121mph and 174mph respectively)
I will definitely look into the new Canavie Android screen. I had previously been considering the Icebox unit, but if you believe the Canavie is the better option and allows the original system to remain functional in the background, I'd be inclined to go with that instead.
I still have one question regarding the tune you gave your feline. Did you need to install a smaller supercharger pulley for that? From what I saw on their website, they recommend (or even require) a matching pulley upgrade for certain tunes. How difficult was the installation, and would you consider it a DIY-friendly job?
My Jag came with all-season tyres, so perhaps that's why it is limited. I'm currently looking into purchasing a VXDIAG VCX Nano JLR DoIP interface so I can investigate things myself using SDD. However, I'm not sure whether this issue would ultimately require a PCM flash instead, which I assume is what the VAP tune does (please correct me if I'm wrong—I'm eager to learn).
