Question Valve Cover Gasket…Again?!

2000 XJ8

An Indy tells me my driver side VCG needs replacement due to leak (I do have on & off oil leak spots in driveway.)

2.3 hr labor $494.50 for VCG set (He says cheaper to buy set ‘than piece together 1 side’) IDK that means.
Part $173.47
T wi tax $682.89

I ck my repair history notes & this will be the 4th time I replace VCG!

11-2009 @ 44,606 miles..did both VCG (Indy)
1-2011 ~ 50K miles Both VCGs (Jag Dealer)
5-2011 54,674 miles Passenger side oil leak VCG replaced under repair warranty by dealer

Now 100,100 miles 6/2026 I have driver side VCG leak.

Is this typical? So many times to do same repair?

Thanks,

Steve

15 years since gasket replacement does not seem abnormal.

Maybe just remove the offending cover; check ever spot on the old gasket, clean it it with WD40 or an equivalent, clean the mating surface, coat the gasket with a light coat of silicone, reinstall: do not over tighten.

Probably go another three years . . .
