OBD issues
We took our 99 XK8 4.0L out for a drive in the mountains today. Our third outing since acquiring the car. Somewhere along the trip the check engine light came on but because of the bright sun and wearing sunglasses I did not notice when or how long it had been on. Car was running nicely and all gauges displayed normal readings. We stopped for drinks to let it cool down and after a half hour I checked oil level and coolant overflow tank and looked for any leaks or loose wires that were obvious. On way home we stopped at two different auto parts stores and had them run OBD checks. Both places showed failure to connect messages after running scans. No codes showed at either place.
Do I need a special OBD scanner for Jags? Previous owner stated this happened to him once but after scanning and finding no faults he said the check engine light went out on it's own after starting and stopping the engine about 7 times over the next week or so.
I have done a search on the forums for this issue but only found one post from 2017 but for a different issue. Any help would be appreciated as the nearest Jag dealer is over an hour away.

I can't seem to get the ebay link to work. It keeps telling me this is not available in my area even though I'm in my ebay account and have ordered from ebay before to this address. I went to the manufacturers website and it say V2.0 is only for 2001 euro cars and mine is a 99. So is yours and you said it works for you. Now I'm not sure if it would be the right tool. It's $145 on their site, Amazon has it for 169 and the link you sent was for 126 and with code I could get it for 118.
I'm going to try the link from my laptop and see if I can get it to work there. Otherwise I'll keep looking or maybe others here can recommend a different scanner. Thanks.

Got it in my cart on Amazon. Thanks, you saved me some money from buying the newer version 3.0. Love the car forums. The members are great at solving issues. Hope this tool helps me track down my gremlin.

I believe the v2 has features that only newer cars than our X-100’s can make use of. In other words, the v2 will work on the earlier cars, but you would be paying more for functionalities that you can’t utilize.

P / S the icsrsoft LR v1.0 is not that user friendly. If you have some issues with it doing what you want it to do,
please reach out on the forum,
or even send me a PM. It will connect to your car but not always as easily as I think it should. It helps to think like a monkey, so I don’t have any troubles with it.

But overthinking it will not make it easier to operate. I’ve had mine for about 7 or 8 years, so by now I know most of the ways to trick it into being productive. Glad to pass along my monkey techniques.

I researched this forum before I bought my 2002 XKR eight + years ago. This forum’s members are what gave me the confidence to buy my car, the first Jaguar I’ve owned since the 1970’s when I was driving e types, a much more basic car with no computers. So the X-100 was a leap of faith for me. Glad I took the plunge. It’s been the most reliable used car I’ve ever owned.

Hi, although my first XK8 was a 2003 model, that error was caused by a lack of hydraulic fluid in the automatic transmission (by the way, there were no additional codes that I recall, and turning the ignition off and on made it disappear, and everything worked again). Another time it was due to a broken oil cooler hose (that left me without a car; now I have another one, and the first thing I did was replace the hoses and the transmission fluid). A scanner will help you a lot; you can start with a generic one and Torque software or another, and then spend money on a specific scanner. And, of course, the forum members are a great help.
