CEL on but also OB2 isnt communicating
The 2000 Xk8 I bought last week is giving me a massive headache. (USA, left hand drive)
CEL is on. (it was NOT on when I bought the car - I drove a couple hundred miles from where it was to my home.. it came on the next day .... of course, aggghhhh!)
It was most likely caused by the bad intake manifold - which I replaced
or
The completely MISSING coolant sensor (!) which I also replaced
or - more likely - both.
so after fixing these glaringly obvious issues all the warning messages on my dash went away and the performance restriction is gone (yay)
BUT
the CEL remains and so I tried putting a scanner to it.
The scanner I keep at home wouldnt communicate
I took it to 5 different auto parts stores for a free scan .. ONE oreillys store man was able to get it to read (using his own personal scanner out of his truck becuse the store one woulnt link) ...And the only code was the p1111 (no issues found status)
BUT he couldnt clear the CEL
he told me to have my husband clear it with his scanner (hubby is a mechanic/RV tech works on top of the line motorcoaches $1M+ he has GOOD tools- no cheapo gear)
Hubby brought home a scanner last night - no link ( at this point I was devastated that an expensive scanner couldnt link.. I need to go ask that Oreillys man what scanner hes using haha..i'll go tomorrow)
So today I took it to 3 more stores and finally I took it to the Jaguar dealership who I sweet talked into at least just seeing if they could connect without charging me a fortune for service time (nice guys!)
They couldnt connect
My concerns are : oreillys guy did manage to connect (but did he really? ... AI says these jags are suppose to have issues that can trigger the CEL but are stored where some other reader has to pick them up? is this true?)
The biggest concerns are: this car is for my teenage daughter so even if there is no problem now - if a NEW problem comes up how would she even know because this stupid CEL is always on
ALSO: where she lives she has to get a smog to register the car (hubby registered in rural Nevada where no smog is needed but she lives in another state and she wants to transfer it because Nevada has the most expensive insurance in the US)
Other considerations:
I have done the HARD RESET ... TWICE ... the CEL stayed on the entire time have checked ALL the fuses in all the fuse boxes individually its not a fuse
The only other notably problem with this vehicle right now is the Quarter windows dont move (im still chasing that down also... its NOT the latch sensor, its not the fuses ... IM going to jump test the relays tonight)
I cant really see they would be related but these cars have unusual wiring so thought I might as well add it in there just in case.
Next steps???
Im guessing I should check the pins in the ob2 connection with a multimeter?
As always any help is most appreciated

(one thing that bugs me is if someone fixes their issue but dont post to say how ... so here it what worked for me)
Lo and behold the codes were old and related to the parts I fixed (that was pretty obvious)
And all it took was just finding the right scan tool!
hubby brought home a whole stack of them
and the one that worked:
BOSCH HDS 250 (Heavy-duty scan tool for Class 4 - 8 vehicles)
I hope that helps if anyone else is struggling with getting a reader to connect to a problematic connection.
Good luck guys!

I have had no issues whatsoever connecting scanners to my XK8. I have a bluetooth dongle, a cheapo generic OBD scanner and iCarSoft JLR and all connect without fuss. Mine is a 2002 but I don't think it should make a difference.
Also - I wish my parents bought me an XK8 for my first car instead of the clapped out 1970 escort I bought myself (which if I'd kept and got cleaned up would probably buy me a MUCH better XK8 than I ended up with!)

We got into these jags because I had a Chopper motorcycle for sale and a bloke in arizona with a mechanics shop had an xk8 asked if I'd like to do a trade.
Since my daughter was about to them 16 and had always dreamed tof owning a convertible I reluctantly agreed but turns out all of us love these jags we are looking forlr more.
The sad part is that her first xk8 got totalled when an old lady had a heart attacked at a stop sign and Tboned right into the jag.
It's our parts car now...engine still fantastic with less than 50k on it
I hear you on that Escort
I wish I'd held into all my cars as a teen I had a lot of Aussie Ford muscle cars and various euro classics
But the XBs and XCs (mad max style models) are worth a fortune ..could buy a house with what they're worth now
The AI is wrong.
P1111 is plausible (it's a (good) pending code as you can read if you search on here).
It's odd to be able to read P1111 but not whatever else may be there.
Ordinary OBD II tools should and nor mally do work so yes diagnose your car to see why not.
Judging by the other faults found so far expect a hack.

I agree totally. Any and all OBDII tools should read the codes . . . even the simple $10 ELM327 using the Torque or Car-Scanner apps. It may not display or diagnose the Jag specific codes, but the generic P codes are a must. The failure of so many to even establish an ECU connection, let alone failure to read the codes, is a serious failure.
I hate to say so, but the OP should not yet count her chickens. I'm confident you have not yet heard the last of this issue. As above, I urge you to fault find what is amiss with your ECU > OBDII port comms. Good luck!
Cheers and best wishes,
Without getting into a big discussion, the car has multiple data buses active at the same time (ISO-9141, SCP and CAN). OBDII (CEL, basic P codes, etc) is only available over the older, slower ISO-9141. See if you can "force" your scan tool to use ISO-9141. If you have one of the better scan tools, make sure you use the OBDII function. If there is a separate "icon" for Jaguar/Land-Rover, it might not give you basic OBDII functions, but go into the proprietary module diagnostics instead.
The fact that this CEL persists through a hard reset makes me think your instrument cluster (IC) might be faulty. Head on to jagrepair.com and check the TSBs. There are well known (and somewhat easily fixable) issues with the PCB of some of those ICs. Take the VIN range published on the TSB with a grain of salt. The IC acts as a bridge between the various bus technologies and can be the cause of failed diagnostics when this one solder joint fails as described in the TSB. The IC is pretty easy to get to and the problem joint somewhat easy to spot with the help of the TSB. For context, the TSB suggests the repair is done by the tech at the shop, not sent out to a specialty PCB repair facility, so the fix is pretty basic.
Best of luck, keep us posted.
