Default '87 XJS Airtex/Wells 4R1192 rotor fit - what is normal?

1987 XJS V12 - 55k miles

I recently updated my plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

I purchased an Airtex/Wells 4R1192 rotor which was a very, very tight fit. I ended up having to tap it down a bit to get it down (with some engine oil to lube too). I thought I had the rotor pushed down far enough but it ended up hitting the cap after I spent all the time putting the mess back together and starting up the engine.

I decided that it would probably be best to remove the rotor and replace with the existing one (seemed to be in ok shape) since I did not want to pound the rotor down on the distributor. I had a really, really hard time getting that Airtex/Wells rotor off the distributor.

Has anyone had this problem and can anyone recommend a rotor and provided some details on how the rotor should fit and what is normal?

I imagine I should not have to force the rotor down but understand that it should not just slide on.

It was my first experience changing plugs on the v12...what a nightmare but still had fun doing it!

Thanks in advance for the help!

I've had a couple that were very tight and hard to remove. I use a dremel to split the side of the rotor so it comes off easily....as too much yanking can hurt the innards of the distributor (although at the moment I can't remember what, exactly, gets hurt)

Never had a problem with the new one being too tight to properly install, though. I'd be tempted to just 'clearance' the plastic a bit with some sandpaper

Others will chime in.

Cheers
