Default Oil Change and maintenance question.

My XJS has currently 10.675 miles and I'm thinking about changing the oil. According to the previous owner and the sticker on the windshield, the car is due for an oil change at 15 k but that could be in 7 to 10 years!
SO, should I change the engine oil and if so should I go synthetic or regular ? It was done about 2000 miles ago meaning a few years back.

Should I also change other fluids such as tranny and brakes ? If so what is the correct brake fluid to use ?

Last,I leave in Toluca Lake /Studio City should I go to a Jag dealer to have it done or use a regular independent mechanic or use Valvoline Instant Oil Change ?

Thank you

Terry,

You'll find as many different views on oil spec for your car as there are members! (It will help if you update your sig with your car details so that members know the year and engine size of your car).

In your 96 AJ16 car, I would put 10w40 semi-synthetic and change it every year irrespective of mileage.

As regards brake fluid change it every 2 years, irrespective of mileage. Do make absolutely sure that you pick someone who knows the defined Teves bleeding system, rather than the Jaguar-defined procedure (and understands the difference between the two). You have to bleed the rear brakes properly on these cars.

As regards transmission fluid, when was it last changed? If the car has never had it changed, then change the fluid and filter. If it was done in last few years, then don't bother.

I'm sure you'll get other views!

Paul

Hi Terry

For what its worth I would never let a Garage/Shop change my Oil for me, as you never know what they would be going to put in there.

Would it be the 'House Wine' or a bottle of their Finest?

You won't go wrong with Magnatec Semi Synthetic 10/40 about £20 for 4litres, so you would need about 3 of those, with some left for a Top Up.

Lots of Special offers around at this time of the year, so you should get out around £50 plus a New Filter.

If you have to let a Garage/Shop do the Job for you, then I would tell them what I want and watch them put it in there.

Lots of Mobile1 fans on here but I had an XJS that hadn't been Started for 15 years with Magnatec in the Engine and She Started first time and ran like a bird.

And so of course I am biased!

At the risk of starting another oil war, cars of this vintage did not come with synthetic oil nor was it ever specified by Jag. It does no harm to use them by all accounts but beware of claims involving them being 'better'.

If you're driving only a few thousand miles per year, the oil will run out out of time before miles, so paying extra for synthetic would be waste.

Two 5 quart jugs of Maxlife 10W40 and a Fram Ultra filter from Walmart will do you fine. Get the oil changed and drive it to see what other issues you may have. The car may drive great...
