Catalytic converters
I need new front converters for my 1996 XJS. What is the difference between California/New York compliant and 48 state compliant converters? Will the 48 state converters work on my California compliant car? The car is only driven in Florida.
Only CA. and NY care. If your car is registered in either, it must have them to pass emisons. Actually more of a procedural thing. Most inspectors doing the visual would not check for the special numbers.
Other more fussy ones, yes.
Even a non approved cat of good quality would do the job. But,
junky ones exist that might to do at first, but quickly go bad.
So, if you car is FLA. registered and FLA driven, the 48 state "version" would comply...
So much fuss, when it could be "sniff clean, pass", "sniff dirty", flunk!!!

Thanks Carl. I was concerned there was a difference that would cause the computer to notice and apply a fault code. Some further research seems to confirm that the only difference in the converters is the required California number on the converter.
