Default Ignition barrel lock cylinder

I replaced barrel lock cylinder after my 1993 XJ6 was stolen. I've got it locked in but the ignition switch isn't matching up on end of cyl. The key won't turn motor over but will unlock steering wheel and shifter. It's Locke I'm missing a notch and key isn't turning all the way. Can turn over with screw driver on elect switch but won't start. Thief threw my key somewhere so I ordered new barrel and key and drilled out old barrel. Can't figure it out and I'm a long way from jag mechanic shop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums Tim,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XJ40 forum. XJ40 is the factory model reference for the 1986 to 1994 XJ6's. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

I also added your Location to your post as the vehicle security system varied across World Markets.

Sounds like you may need to dig deeper into the column. I was just in that area on mine. Have a look at the electric switch itself. It should start the car like you were testing. Is the plug loose? Or maybe the switch housing is broken or dislodged. Good luck, and I'm sorry for your theft.

Hi Tim,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.

The ignition switch should mate up with the end of the key lock barrel without any trouble. I can't recall for certain, but you may need to put the key in the lock barrel and turn the key to orient the tab so it will fit in the slot on the switch, clip the switch on to the barrel, then turn the key back to the OFF position

Are there any warnings on the instrument cluster that might suggest the security system has been triggered and disabled the engine?

Cheers,

Don.

not that I know of.It's been inactive for some time .does the key or barrel assembly have a code or exciter of some kind.I didn't see anything that would suggest that
.when I manipulate the electric device that goes on to lock barrel the car turns on and will turn over but no fire.I'll check and make sure I didn't dislodge a wire in that area, and I'll try turning th key while snapping on elect end..the key isn't going far enough to make it turn over and I can't feel the return spring on key side but can feel it when using small flat head on elect side.thank you all for helping me
I really need to get this figured out
.I've performed maintenance and fixed anything that car needEd .this has got me scratihung my head though..thanks again Don
