Welcome along Dave. Go for it, you won't be disappointed with either car, but you will find the XJ more spacious. There's plenty of buying advice on here, but these are like any other car, just the parts are more expensive. So ensure EVERYTHING works properly, and the autobox is changing gears perfectly. Most problems are fixable without breaking the bank, exceptions are the engine & auto gearbox. It depends what year you're buying, if you get the 4.2V8 or 3.0V6 engine cars you don't need to worry, those engines have few if any common failures. The 4.0V8 engines have tensioner and water pump issues, there's plenty of threads on here covering it.

Hi mate and thanks for the welcome.

This all started when I was looking through Ebay doing some fantasy dreaming and started to notice the price of older Jaguar cars.

I'll be looking for cars at around the year 2000-ish mark, so Im guessing that excludes the newer engines you referred to. I also understand that Jaguar, along with a number of other manufacturers had isssues with the early V8's and Nikasil liners. Do you happen to know what year of production they stopped using these?

I will be after a 4ltr V8 I think in either car as I want it to be a 'full-fat' car, nothing mean and trimed down about it. I made that mistake once before with a BMw 740i when I really should have bought the 750iL.

I don't have a large budget, I do all my own servicing on the 4 Landys I have and the newer ones are definitely into the realms of fuel injection ECU's etc so I'm not frightened to takes something on, I just want to avoid the most obvious mechanical and body pitfalls.

If this was a Land Rover I could give you 'chapter and verse' but my knowledge of Jaguars is little and clouded with lust.

Dave

The 4.0V8 is a lovely engine, it was my introduction to Jaguar too, if you can get an '01 car I reckon you're safely past any nikasil issues, to be fair, if a nikasil engined car is still going, it's likely to outlast a steel lined version. Try to ensure you get a car where the tensioners have already been replaced, it doesn't add to the value, but it sure adds to the peace of mind.

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking at prices in England and reckon it'll be a 2001 or 2002 or at least that what I'm aiming for.

I take it that you are referring to the cam timing chain tensioners? Is this considored a service item with a regular change stipulated?

On the subject of age, when was the facelift of the S-type? Was it about 2002? Are there any important technical changes that would make it worthwhile having one, or is it just cosmetic?

Sorry if I'm bugging you with al these questions

Cheers
Dave

Yeah, timing chain tensioners, sadly they're not on the service schedule, but there are 4 revisions of them indicating how troublesome they were, the 4th versions are metal versus the three previous types were plastic which aged and broke up over time, the metal ones are carried over to the 4.2V8 engine, so any 4.2 doesn't have this concern.

Yep, the early facelift was '02 - it's when the 4.2V8 came in, there are other improvements but nothing drastic, the entertainment system is better too.

Hi, New member, just about to join Jag club, with XF on order. Stay in Falkirk, Scotland. New XF was due this thursday 2nd Dec, but delayed for 2 weeks due to CrankShaft delivery issues. Given snow here just now glad it has been delayed! Just spoke to a friend who got his in March and has had no issues on Winter Mode and Normal tyres. Is that the general consensus?

Hey there n welcome from Cumbernauld

As for the XF quations, you will be better asking them in the XF section......plentyo fowners from US / Canada there to help I guess......probably worse winters and more / deeper snow than we get so answers should be good .....
Catch you around
