Smile Key Fobs - RESOLVED

Hi good people,
Has anyone bought a new key fob from a Jag dealer and programmed it themselves,
Just wondered if it was a different procedure than a second hand one,
Have been quoted £101+vat for the fob and £60 for programming from my local Jaguar dealer.
Thanks and take care
Andy

Andy,

Remote fob on the X308 can be DIY but programming a key needs Jaguar diagnostics or equivalent.

Doesn't matter whether the fob is new or previously used.

Got my new key fob from Devon's main Jaguar Dealer and programmed it in myself, my son in law came with me for a look at the newest Jaguar's in the dealership, anyway when programming the fob he was in the passenger seat and we tried three times and no flashing led to be seen on the j-gate,thought it might be the battery so he went to get one from his car and just by luck thought I would try again and low and behold it started to go through the process and got it programmed, is that a coincidence or does the car know, anyway all done now and life is a lot easier with my fob,
Thanks for your reply Graham very helpful
Take care
Andy

Andy,

Good to hear you got the new fob programmed. I've added 'RESOLVED' to your thread title.

I've programmed several fobs on different Jaguars over the years and the procedure is definitely more 'black arts' than 'science'.

I've seen the thread for programming the fob and that shouldn't be a problem but today I did email an auto locksmith to get a quote for the actual cutting of the blank key and was pleasantly surprised it's only £12.50 + VAT

So basically £25-£30 for the complete fob from Amazon plus around £17 to get the spare cut is pretty reasonable rather than going to a dealer

The only problem I've seen is all the fobs listed on Amazon state X Type 2002 on and mine is 2001 - not sure if there is a difference - does anyone know? - I'd rather not ask the sellers just in case I get bullshite from them to get a sale
