Default Number plate size

Hi, just wondering what the smallest legal size is for front number plates as looking at doing the grille thing and lowered plate on my xk8?, while on the subject what do you consider the best size for the rear as I don't really like the contoured one that fully fits the aperture?, cheers, Al

To comply with British Standard BS AU 145d the standard oblong number plate size is 520mm x 111mm. The short standard oblong is 370mm x 111mm.

Digit font, size and spacing is also included in the relevant regulation Statutory Instrument 2001/No 561:

Character height = 79mm
Character width (except the figure 1 or letter I) = 50mm
Character stroke = 14mm
Space between characters = 11mm
Space between groups = 33mm
Top, bottom and side margins (minimum) = 11mm
Vertical space between groups = 19mm

A legal registration plate allows very little flexibility in size. The only alternative is 'show plates' which can be any size, font or spacing you like but are not legal for road use.

I never liked the contoured plates for my XK8's and used standard oblong with a border as i do only my current XK.

When I had my SN95 mustang, I used motorcycle sized number plates as they were nearer the US licence plate size and fitted the recess in the rear bumper. Never had any trouble at MOT time, or with the police. But that was 3 years or so ago.

Default number plate

If you get stopped by the police with a non legal plate, it will cost you money(£60 i think) and 3 points. Like Graham i have a standard oblong plate on the back

Interesting subject! Question: Are stick-on front number plates of the specified size (both plate and lettering) legal in the UK? I am in the process of building a Jaguar based Ronart, apart from the fact it would look totally out of keeping, the shape of the nose cone does not really facilitate the mounting of standard front number plates, as ground clearance would be a problem.

I think so, a trip to the nearest police station would clarify it for you

All e-types that I have seen have stick on plates on the bonnet (hood) and are consequently curved and steeply angled.
My e-type number plate has only four digits and is, therefore, much shorter than normal. I have never had a problem with either police or MOT's in over 40 yrs.

Hi Graham,
I must admit that I much prefer the contoured rear number plate as per my S-Type. It fills in the pressed shape of the facelift boot area very well and looks more finished than an oblong plate would do.
Here's a picture of the S showing the No.Plate.

YES - it looks good on the S-Type.

I go across the Channel twice a year and so have the Euro GB badge on my plates. This looks weird on the contoured shape!

I've tried to find a supplier who can take the blue background up to the left hand edge but they claim it can't be done.

Hi Graham,

I see what you mean. Yes it would look better if the blue could be taken up to the edge

Regards,
Telfer.
