UK Region - XKR Insurance
Hello to everyone,
I am new to the forum, having just bought a 2002 XKR convertible as an 80th birthday present to myself, partly through reading the posts in this forum, but mainly because the car is so beautiful!
I was thinking back to the cars I have owned I the course of my long life (Too long I hear muttered from the back of the room). Too many to list, but concentrating on drop head sports cars, I have owned, in no particular order:a prewar drophead Mercedes (found in a barn when I was stationed in Germany), TR3, DB3, Triumph Stag, Sunbeam Alpine, MG Midget, MGA, MGB, and a Triumph Spitfire. I have loved them all (except the Spitfire) but Jaguars were always out of my financial reach, until now.
I live abroad half the year, so what I really want is a six month insurance, leaving the car locked away on SORN for the winter months. The cheapest I have been able to find on the price comparison websites is just under £500, and they were not interested in anything less than 12 months. It seems a lot for a car which will only come out when the sun is shining, and an annual mileage of less than 3000 (I have a little Yaris as a runabout.)
There must be many members who take their cars off the road in winter. Can anyone offer me any advice? Also, if anyone could point me in the right direction on insurance companies, it would be appreciated.
Mike

Not sure if this is helpful, but I insure my 1999 XKR through a military vehicle/classic car specialist rather than a mainstream insurance company. I'm in the Military Vehicle Trust and also have two East German Trabants, an ex-Russian army Zil-131 7.5t truck and an ex-Swedish army Volvo TGB-11 insured with them (soon to be joined by an ex-Russian army UAZ-469b). Quote for a full year for the XKR was £300 fully comp, albeit with full no-claims.
Send me a pm if you want details of my insurer. I do get a discount for being in the MVT, so maybe it's an excuse for you to run the *****'s Jeep or Series I Landrover you always wanted?
Best wishes, Colin

I insure with Saga who are supposed to cater for us pensioners lol
The annual premium is less than £300...I could dig out the paperwork if need be...I have maximum NCB, limited to 2000 miles p/y
I think postcode is very relevent to the quote also.
I think you will struggle to get 6 monthly insurance
Suggest you go to their site for a quote....but I always take out by phone and haggle lol
I guess your list surpasses mine.
AH sprite Supercharged) AH sprite n/a MGB X2 TR5 E-Type 5.3 Lotus Esprit Turbo SE TVR Griffith 4.3 (the most fun)

I was with Saga (I'm 64) but they couldn't cope with moving the no-claims discount from my Hyundai [val ~£3k] (which I've kept for day-to-day stuff) to the XJ6 [£17k] ("Different renewal dates, sir") so ... I moved to Aviva Multicar - for the two they charge me about 30% more than Saga did for just the Getz.
I'll probably go back to Saga at next renewal as I like the "any driver in the company of the policyholder in the event of the policyholder being unable to drive through illness" thing, which could be useful.

Hi,
I use SAGA - Just over £200 for 12 months. I would not recommend insuring for 6 months for various reasons - No claims bonus requires continuous period of insurance, and what happens to your car if (heaven forbid) the garage burnt down when not insured?
Enjoy the XKR.....I love mine!

Mike,
I've edited your thread title to add 'UK Region' as insurance varies greatly from country to country and comments relevant to us in the UK don't pertain for instance in the US.
I seem to be with both favourites for insurance - one car with SAGA and the other with AVIVA.

I think what you are looking for is a company that would allow you to surrender the insurance certificate and have 'laid up' cover ie Fire and Theft, but no road/driving cover.
To be honest these days insurance companies don't like things like that because it means admin work, and they will probably charge you (£20 - £40) for doing it. I would say your best bet is to have limited mileage cover; enough mileage to cover what you are going to do in the summer (and a bit to spare) but you will have the Fire & Theft bit all year round - plus (if you leave yourself some miles to spare) you will have some contingency mileage to move it during the winter if you need to without the hassle of having to organise it (and pay for it).
