2013 Cars & Coffee, Great Falls, VA - Katie's
A pretty good crowd for a cold Saturday, but I guess being the Saturday before Thanksgiving made more people want to make the drive out.
good showing of Jaguars - 6 XKEs and 2 F-Types. Bobert and I were sorry we did not drive out Jaguars.
How's this for variety?

It's not a surprise that the last Saturday in November was a cold morning - it was 23F here when I arrived, just before 6:00AM. The morning was clear and crisp, with no wind at all, so it was tolerable. The fact that it was Thanksgiving weekend meant we still had a good turnout at Katie's, with an especially nice group of Jaguars in attendance.

Katie's is at -
760 Walker Rd Great Falls, VA 22066
From Westminster, MD, you will make your way over to 270, then onto 495 towards the American Legion Bridge. Immediately after you cross the bridge into Virginia, there will be an exit lane on the right. You are looking for the second exit, once in this lane - you want to take VA-193 W, Georgetown Pike (Exit 44), right, towards Great Falls. MapQuest says it's 6.4 miles from 495 to the intersection of Georgetown Pike and Walker Road. You cannot see Katie's from the road, so the best way to get to the main parking lot is to drive straight on Georgetown Pike, past the Walker Road intersection, and make a left turn on the street called 'Village Center', which runs between the BBT Bank and the Great Falls Post Office. Katies' parking lot is to the left of the stop sign on Village Center. Generally, at this time of year, you will be able to get a parking space on the 'main' lot if you arrive before 7AM.

One advantage of having the Great Falls Cars & Coffee so close to VW of America HQ is that they will sometimes bring over a special vehicle or two. In the past year, the have brought out a Bugatti Veyron, several VWs and Audis not (yet) sold in America, and this... the VW XL1.
This prototype - one of 50 made - gets 261mpg from a diesel/electric hybrid. The diesel is a .8 liter, 2 cylinder derived from the 1600cc 4-cylinder. The twin-cylinder powerplant is both super- and turbocharged. The VWoA employee who drove it over, and the visiting German engineer answered questions for everyone. The car is largely composite, and weights about 1800lbs. Under current plans, they will produce a total of 200, only for Europe.
It's obvious they spent a ton of time on aerodynamics, with the rear fender skirts, front flush wheel covers, side rear-view cameras, and rear end tapering to a Kamm-style tail.

The weather forecast was for snow, turning into freezing rain, but there was no precipitation when I left home around 5:30AM. There was some lingering snow from the past week, though none on the roads. I saw many salt trucks, idling, on my way to Katie's -- ominous.
Not surprisingly, turnout was a bit low, and was mostly German. Still, a worthwhile day, talking with other car people... Only two Jaguars there today.

With morning temperatures between the high 50's to mid-60's, no one was surprised that the turnout was fantastic today - the Saturday before Christmas!
Several Jaguars there today.

Alan:
It's an Intermeccanica Italia. Italian chassis & body, Ford 351 engine. The finish on this car is fantastic - perfect 'foot-deep' black paint. The company that made this car is now based in Canada, making Porsche Speedster replicas.

I didn't go to Katie's today. It was 9 degrees when I got up around 5:00AM, and the streets were a nasty combination of ice, sand and salt.
I figured it's a good time to finish off the 2013 Katie's thread with examples of the amazing people and cars that made the year so great.
