Default Hourly labor rates

What hourly rate should I expect to pay in a franchise (not dealer) repair shop for work on a 2005 S-type?

Since nobody else has answered yet.....

Probably varies a lot. I'll throw out $90/hour but, really, there isn't any particular way of knowing/predicting with any accuracy what 'the going rate' will be or should be in your neck o' the woods or at a particular franchise. Shops in downtown metro areas often have much higher rates than shops out in the boondocks....mostly because rent is so much higher.

A repair shop can charge whatever rate suits its fancy. And many ...the smarter ones...don't even quote an 'hourly' rate at all. It most cases it's nothing more than "a snare and delusion" as Dad used to say.

If a shop really doesn't like working on a certain car then you'd be amazed how fast the quoted hourly rate can go from $75/hout to $150/hour for the purpose of scaring off the customer. Of course, they could be honest and just say "We don't wanna work on your car".

Some outfits have different hourly rates for different kinds of work, which makes very good sense.

Others will chime in.

Adding a bit more detail to your question might help.

Cheers
DD

I think the Independent who I use most is at $100. That's in a bigger town and with lots of Jaguar/foreign car experience. I feel that's he's earned it, and paying it is part of what it takes for me to own and operate Jags. I'm just glad to have somebody who will do what I can't on these cars - which, frankly, is most of it!

Cheers,
Scott

Most around here are $80 to $100, I assume that would translate to your $$$ fairly well given the exchange rate being almost $ 4 $.

I had a similar case recently with my XJ6, he quoted me over the phone $200 to tint the windows on a family size sedan. Then when he asked the model the price went to $400!!
After a bit of prodding, he admitted he didn't really want the job because he would have to make templates he will probably never use again.

Thanks for all the responses. I take my Jag to a Merlin shop on Rt. 30 in Plainfield, IL. They charge $100 per hour, but they allow me to bring parts I have ordered from Barratt, which saves me a lot.
