I have also used Tire Rack, and they're a first rate operation. They're a great source of tire information /road tests, etc.

Kauffman Tire did me a great favor last year when I blew a tire on a chuck hole in the middle of the night driving to Atlanta Airport. One store had the correct 18" tire and did a pit stop replacement to get me to my San Juan flight on time.

I prefer to use good independent repair shops when possible. I often had to wait behind Panoz' race cars for alignments at NTW in Lawrenceville, GA. If their alignment guy was good enough for a 200 mph LeMans racer, he's good enough for me.

The main reason I avoid auto dealerships for brakes and wheel balances is they're generic repairs easily done by any well trained, well equipped repair shop--and they're much less expensive outside a dealership.
It sounds as if you're needing the popular ceramic brake pads--that put out less dust.

I worked for a major auto manufacturer for 24+ years, and use new car dealerships only for warranty work. I know too well which side the dealerships' bread is buttered on.

Unfortunately I'm out of the loop on Nashville auto repair shops since leaving Williamson County 19 years ago. From the looks of SpeedTV, Nashville has some of the best repair shops and auto body shops anywhere.

 

It's nice to know there a couple others that are from and around the Huntsville area (Spark & Bamaman). BTW Bamaman I've found a great Indie (27 yrs Jag. certified) shop over in Memphis that will beat the dealer in repairs everytime, if you're interested. I've had all my "annoyances" taken tke of by him and now I feel i have a pretty reliable daily driver that really truns heads. Maybe we can get a few more together and meet some time; maybe for a drive somewhere.

Hey Folks, Thanks for the info on the Nashville club (and repair shops). I'm currently living outside Atlanta but will be moving to Hilham, TN (north of Cookeville) within the next couple of years (where my '92 VDP already resides) so I will be back running the Mid-TN roads shortly. Born & raised in Nashville but I've been traveling around the world and the US for too many years, time to come home.

You'll be moving to God's Country if you'll be living north of Cookeville. That's a town that's under appreciated--with a great college, good restaurants (Puleo's) and two magnificent lakes close by.
I also was raised in Nashville. Funny thing, Middle Tennesseeans are kind'a like Texans--they won't leave the place.

That part of the state has great driving roads--most of which are unknown to the public.

Do you really have a '36 Cord? I had a business associate in Memphis that owned one twice--only to trade for a Scraab 377 offshore racing boat and a '72 Ferrari Daytona. I bet he had those cars back.

We are more rural here where I live. Lots of wonderful roads but watch out for the
cops....they are ready for ya.

Bamaman, yes I have a '36 810 though it is currently under restoration and not ready for the road. Unfortunately, like so many Cords, this one was converted in '56 to rear wheel drive and it was a poor conversion (think Bubba with a cuttin' torch). I can't take it back to original condition because the engine and front drive are missing but I have everything else. I am putting it back together as a "Resto-Mod" so I can drive it and I have obtained another '92 Jag to become the donor for the engine and drive line (I love the looks of that twin cam 6!). Unless you open the hood you won't be able to tell it is not stock. I guess given time and money (both in short supply) I could restore it to like new condition. Interestingly, the definitive work on the history of Cord Automobiles does not list this chassis number.

As for being in God's Country, I agree! All my kinfolk are from that part of the state so running the back country roads is where I grew up.

I love my 2000 S-Type 4.0. Its needing some love here and there, like getting the sunroof repaired, getting a new headliner installed, and perhaps someday re-doing of the interior. Its the first car I've owned where I'm of the mind that even if the engine were to blow, I'd put them money into replacing it. The car is fast, lovely to look at it, and pure heaven to drive, even long distances. I added a DVD player/Sirius radio in it to replace the original, and it has the factory GPS which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't see the CD. It even has the now useless but cool to look at original cell phone under the arm rest, that must have looked so cool in 2000, but looks so antiquated these days.

 

Nice! You could always replace the armrest with a later model that did away with the cell phone if you wanted to.
