Question R12 Air Conditioning Service in Los Angeles/ Bakersfield

I just acquired a 1988 XJS Convertible. It is getting warm in Los Angeles, and the blower works well but I think that it doesn't have any Freon. I know that R12 is not "widely" available, but does anyone who can service the air conditioner and get it working without having it converted to 134a. Anyone know someone in Los Angeles or Bakersfield that can do this work without ripping me off? How much is a good price for this type of work? Let me know.

When I left the repair business on Aug '08 we were selling R12 at $50/pound and charged about $80 for a "evacuate and recharge" of the system. You'd likely need a couple pounds of freon.

Any other repairs were additional, naturally.

I don't know of any places in your neck of the woods that still do the R12. Darn few, I reckon, but they're probably out there somewhere.

Sorry.

Good luck,
DD

It's been awhile, but we used Freeze 12 to recharge CAT equipment. Works just like R12. There may be others available. Check the car parts stores. Repair shops would rather just convert.
