"S" switch on center console
hello all, I just recently bought a 2003 X-type and on the center console is a button with the letter S on it. What is this for? When would I want to use it or not use it? The car did not come with the owners manual and I have done some looking around online and have figured out most of the other features of the car. But, this one, I am not having any luck with.
Thanks,
Chris "Thermo" Coleman
P.S. Some may know me from a Ford Truck group. For those that do, I'm here and there should be lots of interesting topics.

the button puts the car in sport mode. It makes the shift points longer (higher RPM's) and stiffens the shocks up. I use my Sport mode when i am driving in the city and turn it off on the highway.
jvegas, thanks. I am loving this car and I have a few things that I am going to do to it to make it more like I want.

Welcome thermo! Hopefully your loving it as much as 99.9% of the guys/gals do on here!
Unfortunately the x-type has no adjustment for the suspension, so the only thing the s (sport button) does is allow for higher gear shifts. Personally i like using the j-gate over the sport mode.

Anyone know further information on this?
I have heard the shocks stiffen from other people also...

dunno, sounds like a waste of gas... and honestly... there really isnt a need in my opinion for sport mode. i have a 3.0, but still rarely punch the jag. essentially, i feel it is lacking pick up...
to even throw salt on the wound. im positive my 03' maxima had better pick up and speed (excluding highway). the maxima is a great car. i miss it

To be truthfully honest my mountaineer has a similar acceleration as the x-type.
But honestly it's hard to compare this awd car to anything else like an 3.5 liter front wheel drive or 4..6l v8 rear wheel drive. I surely don't get the same feeling in my mind when driving the mounty like I do the jag!
The sport button doesn't adjust the suspension it only alters the shift points, unfortunately. If you want adjustable suspension get the xj or s-type r or xk. The str has the cats suspension which changes all the time.

For my normal (semi-agressive) driving, the normal mode would up-shift too soon for my taste. It would be in 5th gear around 35mph. I recently started driving in sport mode and am much happier with the shift points. Give both a try and see which fits your driving style better!
The pics are coming. I took them yesterday, just need to get them uploaded into my computer and then here.
As for the question about what all it controls, I just got a service CD that seems pretty useful. I will see what it says about the sport mode and what all it controls. Maybe it will give a bit more insight and numbers.
If you have any questions about how to tear something apart or stuff like that, this CD has a lot of step by step directions. I haven't gotten into it too far, but it looks like it is very similiar to my 2004 Ford CD which has more info in it than I care to admit to. The Jag CD that I have covers a lot of different years and also different models. So, if you are needing something, let me know.

The back shock are plain gas shock so I don't see how the "s" buton could stiffen them up. I have looked at them several times and don't see anything that is an active control! I could be wrong.

I guess you'll have to get 2 white shoes and one white right hand glove and put an "S" on each! Once you use those 3 things that are white you'll surely have the "S" button!
