Default 02 3.0L Warning Lights but No Codes

I have an 02 Automatic 3.0L X-Type.

The automatic gear box warning light, the e-brake and the check engine light are lit but there are no ODB codes (other than P1000). The car runs fine and never goes into limp mode.

If I turn the key all the way just before starting and attach my OBD reader and press the erase codes button, then when I start the car the lights go out and it runs fine. But every time I turn the car off and then start it again the three light stay lit.

Also when I clear the codes to turn the lights off and jump on the highway, about every 5 miles the ebrake light will come on and automatically turn off cruise control. A few more miles and the e-brake light will go out and I can turn on cruise control again.

Anyone have any idea why these warning lights could be lit without throwing any codes?

Sounds like your OBD tool is not working right.

I have two tools and have used them extensively including another x-type I used to own. I use a hand held scanner and OBDWiz that attaches to my laptop. I am positive the tools are working because I can see a pending code of P1000 which simply means I erased the codes recently.

Plus the gearbox light and check engine light only come on when I start the car. If I clear them they do no come on until I start the car again.

I am a mechanic but new to these cars. But I would check the switch for the ebrake first. I would next check for the correct operation of the brake light switch.

Since the reader is connecting I would suppose that the ECM is good but you never know.

Don't forget that the E brake light is also lit if the level is low in the brake fluid reservoir.

If it's the MIL that self tests then stays on you have one or more codes. That or someone's reprogrammed the car with broken software, which I doubt.

Did you try a new battery? These cars give all kinds of strange warnings with a weak battery.

When I turn the key to the position just before the starter engages, all the warning lights display , after the car is started just the gearbox, check engine and the brake system warning (not the e-brake) lights stay lit. I checked the battery and the date stamped on the negative terminal is 49-09 which is week 49 of 2009. That is fairly old for a battery but the car starts up immediately in cold weather and I have 12.45 volts with the car off. I am going to check the TCM to see if it is wet. The seal at the bottom of the windshield on the drivers side has separated so It very well could be water that has made its way to the TCM.

Volts look good.

MIL should self-test (on then off) before (if there's a fault) coming back on.

Tool is failing if MIL is like that and tool fails to reveal code(s).

Just remember that the battery needs to be load tested and read the voltage under load. Even if your car starts, after the car starts the voltage could be below the threshold for the electronics to function properly. Just saying..........
