Default 02 x type automatic trans problem

I picked up a beautiful 02 x type with 90k on it and all the goodies. clean car! the problem is the trans is in limp mode. The trans has been replaced twice now in this car. I dont think that the trans is the actual problem. I have heard that tps sensor can cause this along with a out of sync j-gate. the trans fluid is brown so gonna flush that. It has 2 codes p0733 and p0734. If anyone has experienced this same problem and came to any conclusions please let me know! thanks! also if there is any test to try

Cool

Hello,
I have a 2001 2.5 auto that had same problem, you will need to do two things. One- reset the J-gate
Two- replace the TCM (transmission control module) make sure you get one for same engine size and year otherwise it will need to be reprogrammed to your car which can be expensive.
Good idea to flush oil out and replace should be nice clear red colour as I'm sure you know?

If you need anymore info let me know I will help best I can

good luck

Thanks for the reply!! So i went through and changed the fluid out 2 times, it was thick and brown and looked like used motor oil. I then actually was able to drive the car. The more i flushed it the better it drove. 1st and 2nd gear work great but it slips in 3rd. once you give it a minute it will lock up in 3rd and then shift to 4th and 5th just fine. So i am thinking that there is a problem with the actual trans which sucks. I added some lucas trans stop slip and that seemed to help. gonna flush the system and fill to correct level one more time and see what happens. I also will try to reset the j-gate. I will look into the tcm. Do you know if can swap a 02 trans with a 04 or newer? seems like if i swap the trans i wanna put one back in with a year that had fewer problems seeing that 02 was the worst year. Where did you find the TCM? it has a 3.0l. Thanks again for the info!!

When I had problems with my trans it was doing a wonder of strange things like not engaging gears, slipping gears, kangarooing along the road. It would drive forget to change gear then kick you up the *** as it slipped into gear, the main thing was I could still drive it mainly because it would be ok one moment and not the next that's when I decided to change the TCM you should be able to swap with a later version providing the serial number matches and its off a car with same size engine. One other thing you could look at is the transmission breather tube these do get blocked and can cause problems. Good luck let us know how you get on
