I note from your previous posts that you have a petrol engine, so it would be interesting to hear what symptoms you now have that make you think you need to clean the EGR because to the best of my knowledge, no petrol X Type has ever been fitted with one. Which is just as well, as the diesel versions are plagued with EGR problems!

If you list your symptoms here, between us we should be able to offer you some help.

I recall reading that the advanced VVT in the AJ25 and AJ30 makes having an EGR valve unnecessary, or something like that. Good thing really, considering how much people have issues with them.

All 4.2 XK8 and XKRs have both VVT and an EGR. The earlier 4.0 engine also has VVT but an EGR was only fitted for some (Unknown to me!) markets.

The need for EGRs seem to be a (literally!) black art

The petrol versions of the X-Type 2002-2008 have a PCV valve and hose, and an EGR. There is a hose connected from the air filter to the frontside of the engine block next to the forward manifold. That hose is connected on the engine side to a PCV valve that allows for ventilation of the exhaust and crank case gases to flow. If it has oil developed in it the PCV valve has failed. Also this is a vacuum line so the hose may implode if the PCV valve has stopped allowing pressurized gas to come through. This happened in the case of my 2002 Jaguar X-Type 3.0. All Petrol versions of this car no matter the engine size use the same PCV valve and hose configuration. The EGR is in a completely different place near the exhaust systems. It is difficult to get to you may need to remove extensive parts to get to it. I would suggest taking it to a mechanic.

Like I said, in my case, it was a bad PCV valve and an imploded Vacuum Line. If you can't readily see the problem I would suggest you take it to a mechanic before you spend too much time on it.

As Magic Juan hasn't been around for the last five years, he's probably not going to see your suggestions! However, I'm interested in your description of where the EGR is on a petrol X Type. There's no mention of an EGR in any Jaguar technical publications and mine certainly hasn't got one, so there's a misunderstanding about EGRs somewhere in all this!

Any offers?

Jaguar used EGR's only on 2.0 & 2.2L diesel engines more common in European X-Types, and not on 2.5L and 3.0L gasoline engines more common in U.S. X-Types. EGR's were previously used on gasoline engines to reduce NOx emissions, but I understand this is now accomplished via computer controlled IMT valves & fuel injection on our gasoline X-Types.
