Default 04 x-type tc failed

i was wondering if someone could give me some advice on replacing a transfer case on my 04 X-Type. Last year a mechanic buddy of mine checked the transfer case oil and it was complete sludge, (pretty much no oil was left) we proceeded to remove as much of it as possible and even found some small metal chunks. We followed the directions in the thread on how to refill the TC and everything went smooth until today. I was at a light and the car would not go into gear and when I put it into park I could hear some noise/chatter. I had the car towed to my friends shop and he contacted someone who rebuilds transmissions and transfer cases and was confident he could rebuild the TC for me. Do you guys think this is the best route? I would hate the purchase one from ebay or from a junk yard and have it fail in a few months to a year.

also i was wondering about the labor/easiest way to remove and reinstall the TC. my friend has been a mechanic for years but has never done any drivetrain work on a Jaguar before.

thanks in advance

You're problem doesn't sound like a TC failure. Not going into gear sounds like a transmission problem. The TC won't make noise when the car is stationary (it's basically a differential).

and i made a mistake by saying it wouldnt go into gear because the shifter would actually go into all of the gears, reverse, neutral, etc....the car just would not move unless you pushed it in neutral.

When you tell only half the story you'll get only half the answers and you've already got my half.
