Arrow 12volt power source in Trunk area

Howdy,
I want to install a 12V socket (EG; Cig Lighter) in the trunk of my X-Type
so that on occasion - I can use it for a compressor etc.

Can anyone suggest where I would best source a 12v supply - from an existing (maybe unused) harness inside the Trunk?

All help appreciated

LCGI, let me look. But, you are looking at something that is capable of handling say 20 amps and there is no "factory" wire back there that is not used with that kind of current capability. But, I can be wrong.

LCGI, ok, did some looking and what I found is going to be questionable as to whether you have it or not. What you will need to do is to open up the trunk of your car and remove the floor there to expose the spare tire. If you look down on the side of the spare wheel well nearest you and a little to the left, you should see one or two computer boxes there (more than likely only 1). The one box that you will definitely have is the parking aide module. If you look next to it (or if you have two boxes there, attached to the box), you should find a 3 wire plug there with a brown, a brown/green, and a black wire. The brown/green wire is capable of up to 20 amps only when the key is in the RUN position. The brown wire is capable of up to 30 amps at all times (comes straight off of the battery). The plug may be located in the left corner of the car as some of the drawings I have seem to show the cables back there stopping in that corner. Please keep in mind that this information is based on MY 2004.25 and newer cars. If you have a 2002/3 car, let me know and I will see what I can find for that. should be roughly the same thing.

One a side note, the second box I am referring to is the box that would be for the trailer towing package. So, that will give you an idea of what this was supposed to be used for. You may also find that you will have to put in a fuse or two to get power to the wires. If you need that info, let me know.

Hi Thermo,
I guess the only things I would want to run from this new 12v trunk socket.... would be stuff that I normally use from the existing Cig-lighter.
I'm not sure off the top of my head what the current rating (fuse) is for that.... but, it would certainly be of sufficient capacity.

Nope, I wouldn't want to run a fridge or do welding from the trunk )

There is a CD Changer in the trunk and reverse parking sensors are installed. But power for the RPS - comes directly off Reversing Light circuit.

There is no towing gear or associated lighting installed.

My Cat is 2003 X-Type 2.5L (auto) LE Sports (indianapolis)

Thank you for any further thoughts and suggestions.

LCGI, first off, look in the fuse box under the hood and see if you have Fuse F30 (30 amp) installed. If you don't, then the rest of what I am going to say will not be present in your car. If you have Fuse F30, then back near your parking aide computer (tire well area), you will have a 3 wire plug there with a red, black, and yellow wire. The red wire is a constant 12 VDC line coming straight off of the battery (rated for up to 30 amps) and the yellow wire is a switchable 12 VDC (rated for up to 20 amps). Both of these would work for you. There are no other wires back there that would do what you are after without stressing the wiring/fuses.

The cigarette lighter connection in our cars is rated at 15 amps. Nothing in the trunk of our cars has that much room on the circuit to allow the addition of a plug with that kind of rating except for the trailer package. Everything else, you would have to play a game of "must ensure this is off before I plug in something to the new socket". The only other option is to run a new wire from the front of the car back to the trunk.

Hope this helps.

Chris,
I just checked and yes.... the 30A fuse you mention is in place at F30.

I will proceed with your suggestion and look for the 3-wire terminus in the wheel well area - later today.

Again.... many thanks for your assistance mate.

LCGI, if you can't find it, let me look at my car and I will see if I can find it in my car. It may be a few days as I will be out of town until late in the week for work. So, any problems, let me know. I will assist however I can.

Hi Chris,
Been in hospital for a few days with kidney infection (now fixed) - so sorry for the apparent delay.
I've had a look in the Wheel Well as you suggested - but had no luck finding the 3-wire connector.
However, there is a much larger female socket in there (has nothing connected to it) this has about 8 wires going into the back of it ?

Could it be that a loom is missing that may connect into the said female socket which in turn provides usual power source for - Rear Parking Sensor and the 3-wire connector you mention ??

Alternately, if you can look for what we seek on your car.... then give me a pointer to it - that would be very much appreciated.

Lcgi, let me take a look at my car and see if I can find what you are talking about. that may be a viable option. Will just need to see what should be connected to it.

Hopefully you are feeling better. Do not forget that cranberry juice can be your friend when looking at kidney infections. Besides it is a good way to get one of your fruits in for the day. I am sure you deal with enough fruits on the roads. LMAO.

Hi Gus,
Thanks for the Post of the JTIS PDF showing pictorials for generic fitment of Aux-Power socket.
Nope, its not quite what I am seeking here - but your contribution is helpful all the same and I do appreciate your input,

I thought you wanted an auxiliary plug for the trunk. Figure 98 of the X-Type shows and for MY 2001 and up figure 99. What amperage i do not know but I think it is limited to the fuse size on the kit. FYI this is a kit sold by Jaguar as an add on.

Hi Gus,
The objective in this instance is to identify a 12V x 15amp power source in the trunk area which can be used for general devices - like what the Cig. lighter socket provides.

The components needed to install the actual socket facility are not the issue and are more economically obtained from any Auto Accessory Store.

Hope this helps to clarify things for you...

Gus,
Nope, thats nothing like what I will eventually obtain (locally here in Australia)

Right now, I just need to Identify a 12v x 15A power source that I use and can connect to in the Trunk area..... I think Chris (Thermo) is looking into this for me - when he has opportunity.

(me thinks you need to read the entire thread - to get a handle on this)

But again, thanks for your interest.
